I have to be honest with ya - the machine is quite messy, software wise. There are tons of things starting with Windows that should not be.

RealPlayer is spyware so I very much recommend to uninstall that. I also would use Task Manager or Regedit to disable or delete all the unnecessary programs starting with Windows.

As for the actual DVD drive problem - if you're already sure you deleted the upper/lower filters as shown or they didn't exist to begin with...

then Microsoft does list Zune as a problem software in relation to this:

"If the drive is listed, try to play or access a CD or DVD.
If you can play or access a CD or DVD, you are finished with this article.

If you cannot play or access a CD or DVD, you may have to reinstall some programs. Some programs might not be able to use your CD or DVD drive until you reinstall those programs. If the problem occurs again when you install or uninstall those programs, contact the manufacturer of the program to see if an update is available that solves the problem. Some examples of programs that might be affected are:

• iTunes software by Apple
• Nero software by Nero Inc
• Roxio Creator software by Sonic Solutions
• Zune software by Microsoft"

So I would uninstall that then reboot. If the drive still is not shown, check upper/lower filters again and/or reinstall newest version of Zune.

I removed real player, tried reinstalling Zune. But still no DVD drive pops up when a cd or dvd is put in the drive. I am not able to copy anything from a cd to my pc n vice versa

Well, you had no DVD for a while now. Unless there is some urgent need, your best course of action would probably be to wait 2-3 weeks until the Release Preview of 8 is made available to the public from Microsoft, because you'll probably want that anyway. Right?

So then just clean install that when it arrives instead of clean installing the CP now.

The DVD drive may be failing - as electromechanical devices, optical drives can develop internal short- or open-circuits due to fracture or tension failure of conductors on flat ribbon conductors. Fortunately the drives are now inexpensive and easy to replace.

A failing DVD drive can cause odd behaviour like slow bootup and slow Explorer windows, and other difficult-to-trace problems. Disconnecting the drive may make the system behave normally again. If this is so for you, then the course of action is clear, and a new drive may solve your problem..

It's gotta be a software issue, especially since it was an upgrade with all sorts of troublesome software on it when it was upgraded.

It doesn't matter it shows in the bios - if the hardware fails to find any media due to the fault, there is no drive available, windows tries to find the removable media (optical) and fails - It has happened on a laptop of mine, (drive ribbon crimped and shorting against DVD aluminium casing) and when the drive was removed physically, everything went back to normal. Replaced DVD-writer and all was OK.

That is not true. A DVD drive which shows in the bios well, regardless if there is media inserted or not, will automatically be enumerated by Windows and available in the Device Manager, unless there is a software issue preventing that.

Windows can not even begin to attempt to find if there is media present or not, if the drive is not in the Device Manager, so the theory is incorrect.

Windows may hide removable drives when no media is present, including dvd. Windows 7 does it by default.
Does it appear as a hidden device in devmgmt.msc?

There's also a Fix it if it is software installation (registry??) related

Windows 7 doesn't do it by default.

No, nothing can cause an optical drive to be hidden in the Device Manager when it is otherwise functional.

We have addressed the upper/lower filters many times already in this thread.

SIW2, the audio problem was solved. My other query-DVD drive not showing, thats yet to be.

In addition to the boot screen, I have attached a picture of the diagnostics for your viewing.

And also i noted down in case the picture doesnt seem clear, wat appeared in the diagnostic screen:

Error code : BIOHD-8
Error : A SMART test failed on the drive.
Suggestion : Back up your important data.
Suggestion : Please contact HP support.
Any suggestion/s regarding this?

No. SMART works at hardware level. It doesn't matter what you put on or installed on the drive. You need to get anything off it that you don't want to lose immediately, then replace it.

Old drives fail very often and since yours is from XP days, it is surely failing as SMART told you.

Will it work under Windows 7 then? Once the consumer preview expires, i might not go for purchasing the final windows 8. So i will have to revert to Windows 7.
