This will be Microsofts biggest ever flop, far bigger than Vista.

Answer one question everybody! If a program locks on you what do you do first? PRESS CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the taskmanager in XP or with Vista and 7 and now 8 the full screen display of options like the taskmanager as well as shutdown options.

But the working solution established way back and "Legacy" was the point and click shutdown options provided from one Start button scroll to botton of Start menu for Shutdown button. With 8 a simple right click on the account profile pic brings out the sign out option.

Actually, you don't have to right-click there, a left or right click will bring up the menu.

Most of the time in 8 I've found that tapping the "Win" button gets me back to the Start screen if a Metro App locks up.

-Max

The Win key here when pressed while having the 8 VM open brought me back to the desktop with the Classic Shell Start menu already pulled down. I presently don't even have 8 on a VHD following the RP mishap where both 7 and 8 installs were trashed when trying out the dual boot of both. The CP probably would likely still be on if I went back to that however being found far less buggy!

Personally I have the shutdown button on 7 set for Restart not shutdown, sleep, hibernate, or logoff. I was able to set it that way with Classic Shell on the RP VM as well. I just hate an OS where you "have to" immediately go for some 3rd party program since the OS itself lacks these options.

You have to remember the gui seen in 8 was designed for Windows RT not the next major desktop release and likely explains why MS is only selling it on upgrade and OEM for system builders media only not seeing a full version on a two disk set! As far as shutting any OS down I never actually worry too much of how that is set up however but the question of will I have any use for it is another matter entirely!

With the Linux Mint Debian second release on the second OS drive presently as well as on VM and custom installed to a flash drive as a live data stick I am now looking at totally different distro with Gnome customizable desktop that supposedly acts and feels more like a 7 desktop then a distro and come preloaded with games and apps for the Zorin OS 6. Zorin OS - Home

That certainly wouldn't replace 7 here either but will be looked over on VM first in comparison to LMD to see if that is worth the effort since 8 has been a large disappointment to begin with. And I am usually one of those that will try out each new version if the opportunity is there but have to hesitate on 8! :(

Simply finding things however has never been any problem. That's simply part of exploring any newer version to begin with.

Just took a little getting used to

Just took a little getting used to that's all. No biggy, it is faster...

After using it for a couple days, my initial sense of being overwhelmed is gone and I'm navigating around very quickly. Just took a little getting used to.

When Vista came out, there were problems such as it was way more demanding on my hardware than XP, etc... things I couldn't overcome.

I think once the general population gets used to the interface changes in Windows 8 that it will be popular.

my God (ctrl-alt-del). I think they are all DATA drunk.

First time you ear about " crt - alt - del " for shut down a PC ? Since ( I think ) Windows NT we use it to log on a PC, quite few peoples are use to it if they work in an office ( this is the way to log to a domain) . It's also use for log off, lock the PC , task manager and shut down, not something new.
Remember there are a lot of people who are users and are not as knowledgeable as people on this forum. My daughter uses Word And XL for here husbands business. Is it that hard to place a button to shut the system down properly. Also does the manual say if you want to shut the system down use ctrl-alt-del. No

Well said... and I often wonder how many on here didn't have to resort to using search engines to find the basics out for W8. And be honest :) Was it all so intuitive that you did not need too ?

Interesting. I had tried a couple of times before without any joy.

Finally got it to work. There is definitely something wrong with the spring on this thing - press it a tad too hard and it jams.

Windows didn't appear to like it very much - it shut down very fast -did the start windows normally thing and it took quite a while to get going.

I don't think I will be doing that very often.

it shutdown properly with "ctr-alt-del" , MS include 2 shut down button, one you open with "ctr-alt-del" and the other on hte charm bar

the manual LOL and double LOL, the last Windows manual I saw was with Windows 3.11 , MS charge more for their OS and don,t print manual anymore ....

Please show me the manual who don't show the "ctr-alt-del"

If you son in law business will have more than 10 pcs, they will probably know about "ctr-alt-del" as it's a requirement to log to a domain, business with more than 10 PCs, usually use real servers

SIW2, may be it's not setup properly , aside you have to hold it less than 5 secondsm because 5 seconds will act as a power off , not shut-down, so it close the PC right away

Interesting that there are now 10,722 members of this forum. WindowsSeven Forums has 231,818. That's 4.62% of W7 membership.

It was proclaimed by the pundits that once W8 hit the streets this forum would be inundated with new members.

Wow! Would that imply that it's not a case of people being uninterested ... it's just that W7 was so hard and W8 is so easy and intuitive to use that Joe public doesn't need any help to run it! Ha ha ha ha ha ..... Stop it! I'm dieing from mirth! :roflmao:

ps I paid $149 (Aussie) for W8 Pro OEM on disk from retail shop ... so don't call me a hate fan.

Unless having:

  • W7 Orb Start Menu imported from W7
  • Explorer 7 running
  • Metro totally gone, (with toggle to restore if wanted)
  • The complete W7 suite of games free downloaded, (not from MS apps), and running seamless
  • WinLiveMail
  • Aero restored

Unless having all of that makes me a W8 Hate man! Guess you could call my OS Windows 7 reinvented?

But then I guess all Joe pulbics could easily do all the same things? But since they don't, a priori, that must prove nobody wants the start menu back! Yeah right! In ya dreams!

Hint. If you read this, be intuitive enough to realize that even though sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, I couldn't resist.

It has been noticably busier.

Apparently there are about a billion Windows installations in the world, of those 46% are supposed to be Windows 7 of which 231,818 are on the 7 Forums or .05%.

4,000,000 copies of Windows 8 have been sold based on an article posted on these forums which currently has 10,722 members. Taking the average of almost 50% installation rate for the members here that would make it .13%.

Seems to me that based on percentages these forums are doing better.

And many with no plans to either! I still have the RP on a VM until that dies! I guess you could say that I would rather buy a second 7 Ultimate disk that includes SP1 seen now for well under $200 then spend the same for an OS I wouldn't be using! Funny how I didn't wait for SP1 with Vista or 7 but would at least if at all for 8!

I was just hearing from someone running 8 Pro who can't run more then one app at a time without a problem. It seems when pressing the Win key to go and open anything else a NetFlix movie viewing will end on the spot for the dual monitor system. I guess the RTM as well as RP is proving to be just as "Buggy" fior some.

Oh really? While 7 was inbetween beta and RC and even after people were going after every build in the wild just to look at each newer build even if it was laced with malwares! That was how desperite many were they would go after developer only builds instead of even staying with the approved builds make public by MS!

The anticipation and welcome for 7 far exceeds anything that 8 will ever see! Have a good look around at the disapproval rate for the major gui changes for a start to see why most are tending to label 8 as a flop. They are more willing to skip over 8 entirely.

On the other hand SF grew fast from the hugh success 7 saw where everyone was jumping in to get help or information like the latest news on 7 back in 2009. The new "Bells & Whistles" seen in 8 however has been a hugh turnoff for many with anticipation going in the opposite direction.

Many coming here now were first late arrivals at SF and now looking at 8 explaining the high number as any new version would automatically see at first. Yet VistaForums is still remaining active as well. I think of those who went back to Vista from 7 to run the older version would now be more prone to shun 8 entirely due to the way MS rippoed up the OS with a Tablet gui imposition.

Each person needs to sit down on a Windows 8 PC and give it a try.

Jim

WHY ? If someone is comfortable with Windows 7, WHY he should sit and give a try to Widows 8, WHY ?

Well Area, can one could give it a try to see if one likes it.

We had the XP fans who still use XP and now we have the Win7 fans who still want to use Win7....why not.... but on the board many are just here for bashing Win8.

For myself i do not see any reason to go back to Win7.

Even better, i bought 4 Win8 licenses (already said this, i know), and every computer will have Win8 in the house.

Never hear anyone complaining overhere.

Jeff

Jeffrys I see no reasons in your post for why a guy with Windows 7 should sit and try Windows 8, I'm not bashing Windows 8, I use it , is just they are too many annoyances, If the customers don't complain they will be no change

Since you are from Belgium, " Windows 8 n'est pas une bonne cuvée "

You talk about fan, let say that someone who find Windows 8 perfect, for me is a Fanboy, as every OS are far to been perfect.

My only big complain about Windows 8 is the lack of possibility to re size the tiles and the hot corner. The rest I don't care that much

That's a fair comment, but even so, after the initial flush has died down, the ongoing burgeoning effect would expect it to progressively continue to escalate. Has this initial increase rate continued to rise, remained static, or decreased?

To catch up to W7, assuming W7 remains static, this forum would need to acquire approximately 6,141 new members every month for three full years.

Apparently there are about a billion Windows installations in the world, of those 46% are supposed to be Windows 7.
4,000,000 copies of Windows 8 have been sold based on an article posted on these forums.
Rob, based on those figures you've supplied, that makes:

Windows 7 = 460 Million active copies.
Windows 8 = 10 Million active copies. And they're at heavily discounted promotional prices!

Windows 8 = 2.17% of Win7.

That really says it all. But in fairness, lets check back in 12 months, eh? That will really tell the story, but if I were a betting man I would want to hedge my bets on W8.

I think you and Mystere are programmers. Maybe you can both help me with this problem, which I've just discovered and which is a major glitch for my use of W8 as my flagship OS.

I do a lot of tax work using Office 2010 Excel spread sheets. Excel files created on W7 will not print on W8 using an identical printer on W7 & W8. That being an HP Deskjet 3050 j610a connected via USB cable.

I also have the same Office 2010 on both W7 & W8 ... multiple licences. Word files created on W7 print fine on W8. Excel files created on W7 will not print period. When the print button is clicked, a small window flashes briefly showing the job has been sent to the printer. It shows as queued in the "See what's printing" window in Devices & Printers in Control Panel. After a few seconds it disappears from the queue in "See what's printing".

Excel sheets created in W8 print fine on W7. Just to be sure, I interchanged printers between W7 & W8. Same result.

I have discussed it at length with HP techos with them controlling my PC, and they said the problem is in the software. I tried to discuss it with Microsoft Australia, which is a misnomer, because it's all offshore and I'm talking to someone in the Phillipines or Malaysia. They simply said it is not a compatibility issue, the problem is in the printer. And they really did not want to know about it. The MS guy I spoke to was not even aware of the Personal use licence for OEM copies of W8. And before he would discuss it, talked to his supervisor after taking my installation code in order to verify it.

Newly created spread sheets in W8 using Office 2010 will print OK. So there is a definite difference in the format of spread sheets created with Office 2010 in W7 & W8.

So the work around is to create and save a blank new Excel 2010 spread sheet. Then to copy/paste the whole contents of the Excel sheet created in W7 onto this new sheet created in W8. If the new sheet created in W8 is simply opened, and not first saved to desktop, then when you try to paste a copy of the W7 sheet it gives an error message that formulae can't be copied. If the new sheet is first saved to desktop, closed and re-opened, it copies, after using the paste options of Paste, Paste Formulas & Paste formatting. Even then, the text/numbers appear as the default Calibri, not Arial as in the original document.

The problem is, this means creating huge numbers of spreadsheets to duplicate all the existing ones on W7. Which in effect is not really a practical solution.

The other question is, how do I get MS to investigate this problem. The fact that sheets created in W8 by the same office program, will print, but ones from Office 2010 in W7 won't, tells me they have different formats. I've tried running Excel on W8 in compatibility mode of everything from XP, Vista and W8. I have a case number with HP and their senior techo asked me to report back to them on what MS had to say.

Any light you can throw on this would be appreciated, because I can't change to use W8 as my main machine until this issue is resolved. And if MS won't acknowledge it as being a problem and doing a patch, then I'm cooked!:(
