This will be Microsofts biggest ever flop, far bigger than Vista.

7hrs. to wipe a drive? You are certainly spending far too long. You could have backed up the files you wanted and simply nuked the C primary in only a matter of a few minutes by booting live from disk. The command prompt option to run the DiskPart tool to use the clean command only takes a matter of seconds to wipe a 1tb drive.

Incompatibility errors are to be expected with any newer version of any OS to begin with. Unfortunately you found that one out the hard way. :(

Norton 360 is an old flavor of Symantec's wares with the Norton Internet Security 2010 or newer being far more suitable for both 7 and 8. I use a totally different av program entirely that did not have any problem with either CP or RP to go on while that after examing the updated form of MS Security Essentials renamed to replace the Windows Defender already included in the latest.

The new form of WD remains dormant once you install your usual protections on unless like you saw a clash or other problem comes up. You should have still been able to remove Norton without the need to wipe everything. Unfotunately too little known and too late to be any good for you now however.

Why would I want the extra complication in my life of trying to remember which UI to use for which app????

I'm sorry. What? Seriously? If you think this, how do you function in life when you have so many choices? What clothes to wear today, having to remember how to tie your shoes, oh my god.. which pedal in your car should you depress to accelerate? Oh my god! How do we function?

Seriously. That is one of the most ridiculous arguments I've ever heard. Out of all the choices I have to make today, which UI to use rates about a 0 on the complexity scale.

Besides. You *DON'T* have to remember which UI to use. You just click the freaking icon and it automatically goes to it.

The simple fact is that the none of the Apps on Metro are up to the job, so using your logic I will go to the apps I like and they are on the Desktop, so Goodnight Metro.

Really? You seriously think none of the metro apps work to your standards? You're saying the weather app simply isn't functional? That Minesweeper is broken? That Netflix just doesn't work?

There are plenty of Metro apps that work just fine.

I have no doubt Win8 will have a loyal following with all the Winboys, just like Apple Fanboys would never dream of owning a Galaxy. I'll stick with Win7 until it dies of old age.

I am quite fond of my Galaxy SIII. So please don't put words in my mouth. If you have no intention of using Windows 8, why are you even here? Are we seriously supposed to take your opinion when you don't even use it?

7 hours seems extreme to me. Wiping a drive, especially with "military standards", is quite different than formatting. Yes? Is that what you were performing? Just curious.

I still don't understand why people are still bashing Windows 8.

I have Windows 8 setup to where it boots to the desktop. I installed start8 to get the start menu. At this point I don't see much difference from Windows 7. I have not messed with the tiles much yet. I tried a few metro apps but thought they were to plain and basic so I'm going to wait till the Windows 8 store gets better.

You do not have to use the tile side just go to the desktop. If anyone has really given Windows 8 a fair try they will see the difference between the tiles part and the desktop and the desktop is not that much of a difference.

My daughters laptop had Windows 7 and it had a virus(she let anti virus expire). I formated the drive and put on Windows 8. I installed start 8 for the start menu also. I put all the programs on she uses and setup the desktop pretty much as she had in Windows 7. 5 days latter I asked her how she like the new Windows 8 and she said I didn't know you put Windows 8 on my laptop. She thought it was still Windows 7. My daughter is a casual user of Windows so maybe that's why she didn't notice. Most people I know are that way.

I don't care for the tiles myself. I would rather have icons like Android. I like to have folders on my screen then my apps in the folders. I don't see a way to do that with Windows 8. Maybe in time Microsoft will change this and add folder support or a third party app will be developed. Windows 8 needs time to evolve. I can remember when Android first came out, it had growing pains.

So before you bash Windows 8, try it out for a while. Don't just read other peoples blogs and you tube videos. Actually install it and try it. Install the Preview release. I forget when it expires though.

So far I like Windows 8. The only thing that did not work was my Team Group SR1 16GB flash drive other than that all my hardware works.

that's my 2 cents

Jim

It's 1 year I try it , is this enough because I still find very annoying things that make me prefer Windows 7. I can deal with those annoyances but you will not make me say that I love Windows 8, this is not true, this the worst OS Interface Microsoft did until now. It's plain retarded to force peoples to use hot corners with a mouse on a desktop. And yes I know about keyboard shortcut, but all my customers and peoples around me don't

Windows 8 as so many good features, but they simply ruin it with this hot corner retarded interface. Where was the problem to make options to make it more friendly to mouse or touchscreen, where the users can choose ?

I have never been fan boyish in anything, but to not admit the problems some peoples are facing with Windows 8 interfaces, is pure blind fan boyish

I admit there are changes in Windows 8. Some I like, some I don't but that will be with every OS. Nothing so far is a deal breaker for me. I am just giving it time to get used to it. There is going to be changes, you either roll with it or move on to something else.

Different tastes for different people. When I first read about Windows 8 I read that it sucked so my first thought was I will wait for Windows 9 but then I decided to download the Preview Release and after a couple of months I liked it. Again I use the desktop part. I don't use the tiles much yet.

Just because one person hates Windows 8 doesn't mean the next person won't. Most people will fall some where in between love---hate. Some people don't like change so they won't give Windows 8 a fair chance. Each person needs to sit down on a Windows 8 PC and give it a try.

All I am saying applies to a desktop as I have not had a chance to play with a ARM tablet. At this point I wouldn't want a ARM tablet. To little for to much money. A tablet that will run full Windows Pro at $1,000 plus is over priced for me also. I bought a Motorola Xoom Tablet 6 months ago for $399 and it's just fine. If Microsoft changes the way it does metro or what ever they call it I might consider a ARM tablet. One screen and tiles only does not cut it with me. Way to much on the screen and not much of a way to organize my apps. Tile are very limited way of doing things. So ya Windows 8 tiles side sucks to me.

As for the new stuff like the hot corners, I'm getting used to it and over time it will be just as normal as every thing in Windows 7 was. You just have to take the bad with the good. Each person needs to try it and decide for them selves.

I agree with you on that Microsoft should of made the metro for Tablets and left the desktop alone. This has made it very confusing for the casual user. For me it was not hard to understand the two differences. There is no reason to have touch support for a desktop. I would not use a touch monitor for a desktop.

Being mobile devices are a big part of out daily lives, I think Microsoft is trying to make the experience the same so if you go from the desktop to a mobile device or vice versa you know how to use it. Having a desktop version and a mobile version is just fine. The way you use the two are different so it makes sense to have two different versions of the OS. Having one OS for both does not make much sense to me at this point. I'm just trying to roll with the changes and make the best of it.

They don't. If someone is interested in upgrading to Windows 8 they need to try it for them selves and not rely on what other people are saying. If they are happy with Windows 7 and have no interest in upgrading then don't.

If a person is happy with Windows 7 and has no interest in upgrading probably won't be here on this forum. The only people I can see coming to this forum are people thinking of upgrading. Why else be here?

So when I said "Each person needs to sit down on a Windows 8 PC and give it a try.", I meant that towards people that are interested in Windows 8.

Re Apps...guess what...I have no interest in Minesweeper or any games apps, and guess what -Netflix doesn't work in Australia.

Very happy with the separation of my Tablet and my PC. Both totally different UIs but on two totally different devices with different uses. Just think MS should have kept them separate.

I had the choice of doing a quick format or a clean wipe and knew beforehand that a clean wipe would take quite a while. I'm not complaining about that.

I removed Windows 8 and replaced it with Windows 7. I would return my copy of Windows 8 to Best Buy if I could, but since I opened it I won't be able to do that. So, instead I'll just use the dvd as a coster to put my beer on. Even if I could make Win8 look like Win7 there would be no purpose in doing so. IMHO Win8 is a flop, worse than Vista.

I love how closed minded some people can be and how this cycle always repeats. I remember before 7 came out, people were ragging on the task bar. "It's just Vista SP2 with a shiny new taskbar." "They copied Apple!" "Why spend money on such a minor upgrade?" Now it's the holy grail of operating systems. Same happened with Vista (aside from high praise) and XP. Vista has a bad name, but in reality Vista SP2 is similar to 7 in performance and compatibility. XP had lots of issues upon release and didn't really shape up until SP2, with fixes and when hardware and drivers had all caught up. Wait, like vista? What?

What will happen when Windows 9 rolls around? The same thing. It will be lauded as garbage while 8 is praised.

If Windows 8 contained all the features of W7 and allowed you to run the Metro interface if you wanted to there would be little to complain about. However they decided to remove various features like the start button, gadgets, Virtual PC (32 bit version). I remains to be seen whether this was a wise move.
