Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't sure about the situation PREVIEW>GA.
    Works just the same, then.

You can use the default key to install from the iso, then use your purchased 8.0 key to activate.

I don't think you can upgrade the 8.1 preview unless you have an 8.1 key.
Apologies that I'm probably not answering the question (certainly not the part about ISOs) ... but in case it helps anyone, I have done the following:

    • clean installed the 8.1 Preview using the 8.1 Preview ISO and the default Preview product key
    • upgraded in the Windows Store to 8.1 Final
    • Windows boots up with no problem and takes me through the rest of setup
    • input my 8.0 Product Key and activated 8.1 successfully.

The 8.0 Product Key was a Windows 8 Pro Upgrade key that had previously been used on the same machine before I wiped it with the Preview.

So you can upgrade the 8.1 Preview using an 8.0 key - I've done it!
    Thank you David.

Was this on an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 Pro preinstalled?

    Windows 8.1, 10

    Hi Shawn,

The PC was originally Windows 7, not OEM Windows 8. I originally upgraded it to 8 Pro when the cheap Windows 8 Pro Upgrade offers were around last year.

As I hadn't anything important on the PC, I wiped it with a clean install of 8.1 Preview, then upgraded to 8.1 final as above, using the Windows Store.

I think one difference to what I've read about the upgrade from 8.0 is that I *had* to have a Microsoft Account to start the download; maybe it's a different Store in 8.1 Preview.

Also, I had this message which I guess is specific to the Preview

When I ran the 8.1 Final install, it took me through the Setup steps (agree to licence terms, pick a colour scheme etc.) and had an "It's time to enter your product key" step during that phase.

However the Product Key message did have a "Skip" option, and I was able to enter the Product Key later, once Windows 8.1 was running (although it did require internet access). The product key I used was the same Windows 8.0 Pro Upgrade key which I'd used to upgrade the PC to Windows 8.

    Does that help?

Yep, that helps for the 8.1 preview. Thank you David.

The main issue is for those wanting to do a clean install 8.1 with a 8 key instead of upgrading from 8.

Activate retail Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 Product key.

    Windows 8.1 Pro

Since my laptop has Windows 7 originally installed, which I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro via the discount upgrade program a year ago, which in turn I upgraded 2 weeks ago to Windows 8.1 Pro via the Windows Store, can I use this method to download either a full or upgrade version of Windows 8.1 Pro such that I can use it for a repair install or a system refresh?

Remember that I only have a Windows 8 activation key, not Windows 8.1 (since I directly upgrade via the Store).

Hello Andromeda Boy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Sorry, but not directly with a Windows 8 product key. You need a "retail" Windows 8.1 product key to be able to directly download a Windows 8.1 ISO.

However, you might see if the method in the tutorial below may work for you though.

Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center

Having upgraded an 8 Pro WMC upgrade to 8.1 Pro WMC via the Windows store Update, I had no way to download an ISO image for 8.1, without falling into numerous dead ends.

Eventually I had to resort to using a Windows 7 installation, and run the Windows 8 pro setup on that to "prime" the C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebSetup\ folder so that the Windows 8 key I had would be accepted by the Windows 8.1 setup as a valid key to start the download.

I could then follow through to create a Windows 8.1 installation .ISO file. At last.

    That was 64-bit.

Certain files have become corrupted on my computer and windows programs like windows update cannot connect to the internet. Therefore the windows setup won't download on my computer. I tried to download the windows 8 setup on another laptop and save it to a usb drive, only to realize after the fact that the other computer was 64 bit and mine is 32 bit. I do not have access to another 32 bit computer. Is there any other way I can download the windows setup?

No guarantees that this will work... but if you have space on your disk and enough RAM on your working machine, you could try downloading the Evaluation version of 64-bit Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and run it in a Virtual Machine (eg. using VirtualBox or one of the other free VMs). Then use the Windows 8 "download using a product key" link within Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

You need the right hardware (especially processor) though - my old laptop lacks a crucial feature to run 64-bit Windows in a VM, so I couldn't do it from that machine.
