Hello Rose,
There are several flavors of start menus for windows 8 the one I use is "Classic Start Menu" which gives you the choice of using either the Start Menu from Win 7, Vista, or XP (there are a great deal more offerings in Classic Start Menu). There are skins out there that will allow you to change the look and feel of the desktop also. There is a nice program (ModernMix) put out by Stardock that allows you to use the Modern Apps from the App store in desktop.
So there are a good deal of programs and apps that can be downloaded and used to change the look and feel to whatever you want, Just remember to create a recovery point prior to using any of these programs/apps before applying them. Good Luck, and remember Google can be your friend. . .

Rose the computer I bought on Monday came with Windows 8 installed and after two days of grappling with it and getting nowhere I've reverted to the desktop and downloaded a start menu so I can at least use the computer.!
Can I get back to My old Classis Windows... using this W8 I have on this new laptop ?
which I couldn't do when confronted with a screen full of apps and I will, .
Ok the problem with windows 8 is there is no color and appearance just like windows 7. Where you can change inactive menu, active menu, selected menu, message menu.
I have the same problem. The fact that you cannot change the colors (e.g. of the tiles) makes it a lot more difficult to quickly find what you are looking for.Ok the problem with windows 8 is there is no color and appearance just like windows 7. that wasn't an issue with me because i really don't care what color everything is as long it work ,i don't mind it all being the same color
