strangely mse is working on my w8cp, it was the really first thing installed after recovering from total crash caused by symantec endpoint protection.
installed without any troubles and even recently reported suspicious file (keygen)

Have been using it from the first install as my main active protection, until I remembered that I had multiple Norton licenses. Now I just keep it with no online protection and do a scan with it once in a while to backup Norton. Didn't know it didn't work.

The more I use 8 the more I like it. I think windows defender covering all your anti virus and spyware is a good thing. It saves you having to install additional anti virus. Maybe they should have renamed it to avoid confusion, but doesn't really matter once you know it's a full security program.
Does anybody know what w8 will retail for when finally released.

I don't trust MS, I have always used Avast Free Edition Anti-Virus, works great for me

You don't trust MS to provide antimalware abilities on an operating system that is part of every function you already do on the pc and that they designed. If you think about that for a moment, it's very unreasonable - meaning you already gave them 100% of your trust when installing the OS.

The OS is trustworthy but this critter MSE is gonna do ya in! Just sayin

Is it possible to remove windows defender and put your own anti virus in. Not that I want to as I'm quite happy with it....just curious.

You wouldn't want to remove it. Although it is possible, it is part of the OS and really should be left alone. (<<< Opinion)

What you'd want to do is to disable it instead and that can easily be done. Type services.msc in the start menu and press enter. Set the Windows Defender service to disabled and stop it too.

Thanks GMan I was just curious as I'm quite happy with it .... it does the job. The AV companies will be panicking when w8 takes off it'll make buying AV pointless.

Like all the other companies they put out of business. Like many emperors they will face defeat, the phone market will stay with Android and iPhone and Microsoft will lose credibility in the OS market. this is Waterloo 8

I much prefer manually installing MSE over Windows Defender, as the MSE UI has a lot more information to it than the preinstalled Defender UI.
