I hadn't heard about this KB2975719 thing until a few days ago, when it appeared in WU as an optional update – it seems it was not available on the Patch Tuesday. I installed it and then my PC got all messy!

First, right after installing it, I checked again for new updates and WU showed an error (I forgot to write it down). Then I tried a System Restore and it didn't work. Then the reversal of that System Restore didn't work. A warning says it may be a matter of disabling the anti-virus software.

Now I open WU and it's all blank. Then I open Control Panel and it's all blank. And now it takes ages for simply shutting down my PC!

CountMike, I am so sorry and embarrassed.....I would never use THAT WORD in any post. Reminder TO ME: Always read your posts before entering "reply"
Oh, don't worry, I've been called worse , lol. Like I always say: "Call me anything you want but not late for lunch"
You've been called worse......how can that be, you're such a good person.;) BTW, in the US the word we use is "dinner" not lunch. Then again I guess we could change the phrase to include both lunch and dinner. What the heck, also add "breakfast". LOL

In Canada, we used Lunch for noon break when lunch (catering) truck arrives end we had Lunch break, others were coffee breaks, than go home for dinner, evening was for supper and morning was breakfast. No wander there's so many "handsomely rounded" people. Include "Midnight snack and you see the picture (in wide format).

You have a great sense of humor. Just the other day in our local newspaper it stated that obesity has grown considerably in our state. It has really become a major health problem in the USA. Oh, and the midnight snack......I wake up anyway between 2:00-4:00 a.m. with hunger pangs......hard to refuse, so I have some cereal.....and skip the actual morning breakfast.

Skipping morning break-" fast" is not a good idea :)
But 2-4am snack may cover up for that ;)

Since early school days I never had o breakfast (coffee and doughnuts notwithstanding) but on the other hand I never updated Win XP (except for SPes) and survived. Never got fat or infected (XP ). Win7 I never updated before SP1 (actually I tried but they killed my activation so I gave up). After SP1 that problem was solved. Win 8 I religiously updated from the beginning and never a problem except for drivers for GPU when going from 8 to 8.1 but that got sorted out by AMD a week later.

During Windows 95, 98, XP days, I didn't know about updates :D I don't know if they released update then:(

I think I got to know about these from when they released Win 7, but I've not had one to update;)

But now in Win 8.1, I check for updates, do scans, backup etc , basically I planned for keeping updates set to automatic until these august updates came :(

I had 21 updates and 1 optional, did them all with no issues. KB2975719 was one of them. I see it listed on 8/12/2014 as well as today. I've had a couple of reboots since then and no issues that I know of. My System screen shows Windows as activated.

Re KB989647 is listed as an update but isn't checked to download on my laptop. I did take a look at what it was about and have no idea what's it's all about. Since it wasn't checked to download, I need not worry about it, correct? Also, is there anything special I need to do before downloading all the updates?

Some updates need to be done by them selves, that may be why its unchecked. [DEL]It's unchecked for me too on my laptop.[/DEL] It wasn't that update that was unchecked for me. I'm just doing the updates now, 22 in total. After a reboot i'll run Windows update again and see if its till listed, if it is I'll install it then. I can't remember if I installed that update on my desktop PC, there was 1 update unchecked. I'll have a look later on when I'm back on my desktop PC.

After a reboot there was 1 update listed but unchecked, the last 4 digits were 4006 though not 9647. KB989647 is listed twice in my update history? The first one done with all the others is listed as Succeeded and the second more recent entry as failed? Running check for updates shows up to date?

KB2984006 is listed as optional for me also. I installed it and no issues that I know of. I just checked on my desktop and after doing all the rest yesterday and KB2989647 is listed but not checked. It wasn't checked yesterday so that's why its not checked now I guess. I'm going to apply it anyway.

Thank you alpha. I was so stressed out yesterday re these updates I was nearly in tears....I'm allowed....I'm a Senior Citizen.:) My husband didn't bug me the rest of the day.
Thanks for the info. I'll do as you suggested and if it's still listed after rebooting I'll installed it. One more thing, I reviewed that lengthy article about these updates, and it contained prerequisite to download before doing the updates, did you do that or it's not necessary. Thanks so much.
