Windows 8.1 Aug Update Released (KB2975719)

There were warnings about that patch-pulling affair, even before they officially pulled it back all over the place, even on non-computer related sites. If they made a patch to uninstall that one all the AVs would consider that a threat and would not let it do it.

I never saw any warnings and just now learned about the whole fiasco from this website.
Well, it's only "Semi - fiasco" Lol. only half were affected. I have seen it on Yahoo news site first and wandered what it was about til I found about problems some had. Of course, computer related places had stories about it too. First it was "Seems like some have problems with KB........." even before it was my turn to do the updates.

It all depends on what websites you frequent and what news letters you subscribe too. I get stuff from ZDNet and PCWorld and it was mentioned with links to their articles on it.

Okay, I don't frequent many websites, just for regular news (and lots of bad stuff going on right now), Bruce's website (THE BOSS), and paying bills, stuff like that....nothing technical, way out of my league. Of course this site as well occasionally.

It’s good what they perform presently with bad updates, but I feel they could go one further by releasing bulletins via email.

Overall it would be a good idea that MS would notify users of bad updates for sure. Not all people read tech news, especially the commoner. Perhaps through Action Center, although that’s not a direct means on communication that I know of. Perhaps upon finalizing an installation or upon first use of an OEM machine for option to join an email list?

option to join an email list < And I should add > concerning updates.

I would think it would be easy for them to add that option for those that use a live ID. The question is how many would actually take them up on the offer?

Any email domain should do just as any waiting list or notification in a site does. I think at least they should make the offer. If one doesn't sign up, then pay the consequences. We all know that MS writers and/or their updates aren't always perfect. PCs/devices are important machines in our society now. If one uses one, one should learn how to maintain them just as car, lawn mower, tool, sewing machine, or any other machine.

"The usual method is to pull the patch, which they did, and then issue a patch to undo of fix those that did the original patch before it was pulled".....then why didn't I get the patch directly to fix it. Why was't the patch downloaded to the HP Support assistant? I don't think I subscribed for e-mail from Microsoft.....and I don't remember given a source to do so. Does Microsoft e-mail this important information if you did subscribe?

Right now, there is no opt in offer for e-mail notices during a Windows install. With a Microsoft live ID though it could be offered, if they wanted to. As a Microsoft MVP I do get e-mail from Microsoft. I get what I opted in for when I was accepted. You can tailor it to suit your interests. Even so I heard about the issues here before I saw it mentioned in my Microsoft e-mails. I didn't get any e-mail from Microsoft specifically dealing with those patch Tuesday issues. Not that I can remember anyway. Some of the stuff I get is subject to non disclosure anyway.

Thank you, alpha. So, I guess nothing will change at this time, Thanks for your help. Okay, something strange just happened while typing my last sentence......an audio for some ad just started......how did that happen.....? Strange.

Perhaps you have some adware. You might want to do a scan.

If you have an MS account there is a category under Basic info > Marketing preference to turn on or off. You can sign up to receive info on all kinds of things in MS sites such as MSDN, TechNet, Safety, and the likes.

I signed up ages ago to get emails about the security bulletins. However I can't figure out how I would subscribe to these now if I didn't have it already - the MS page seems to offer RSS but not emails.

(I note that they did say a few weeks ago that the emails would stop, then reinstated them... but I wonder if they forgot to put back the option on their website?)

Thank You

I just want to say "thank you" to the following folks who responded to my post last week. I don't remember how to do the "kudos" (it's an age-related thingy). So, Thank You's to:

HyppsieGypsie, re the audio intrusions......I was able to block them using my Norton 360 application. The only problem is I have to reactivate every 24 hours, or the dumb audios come back.

Yes it was blocked automatically by the forum software. That's why you see people put an @ in instead of an a. It cheats the block. And if you see people talking about PRON, they are probably not talking about shrimp. ;)

Things like that happen but it's even worse with autocorrect, seen some hilarious things, that's why I turn it off.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. We all know it was an accident and the forum software caught it. If it had of been a different letter nobody likely would have noticed.
