Tablet buying

I don't own any of these devices but I see that a 128GB Surface pro is also $999. Does that make it cheaper than the 128GB iPad.

Considering the capabilities of the Surface Pro to an ipad, this shouldn't even be a question.

Hasn't this been discussed to death?

It's like this,

If you have 2 desktops, one has Win8 Pro and one has WinRT, but let's say for argument sake you could drop the ipad os on the desktop instead. Let's also say the prices fall in line with the tablets.

Which would you choose for your desktop?

The one that gives you limited ability? or the one that gives you full functionality?

I think the choice is obvious when you consider prices, and what you MAY want to do with it at any given time.

Yeah, you can throw in, what do you NEED, but let;s be realistic for a change.

If you want to go this route, that's fine,,, the largest majority of people don't need anything more than WebTV.
So, why even offer/suggest a desktop at all?

Really? This a dead horse...

Alright then, I'm game though. iTunes to manage said ipad to transfer media from an external hard drive or flash drive or microSD card onto the ipad. BlueStacks if you're into android apps and/or have an android smartphone and would like to use some of the apps on your tablet PC. Bittorrent clients, believe you me, this one thing here is something that everyone and their technologically enabled cat will appreciate as apple won't ever allow that on ios. A USB 3.0 port that allows for the standard connectivity of every device on earth, from plugging in an iphone, Windows Phone, or android device to add things on or off it. Like I've said, everyone and their technologically enabled turtle would appreciate this simple feature that isn't on the ipad. Sure, 128 gigs on a Surface Pro isn't enough for some, but plugging in a 500 gig hard drive or 4 TB hard drive would be plenty fine for many.

Then for the advanced stuff...

Office 2010 if you already have a license for that, or Office 2013 with Outlook if you want to use that. AutoCAD with the stylus for people that need to use something more than a simple sketchpad app from Autodesk. Then, Photoshop CS6 and/or the whole Creative Studio suite for people, again, who need something more than a simple photo editor that ios would have. Or even, a screen recorder software like Camtasia Studio for those who make tutorial videos. Some might use external USB hard drive enclosures along with HD Tune Pro to check a hard drive for errors when they're elsewhere from their main PC. Basically and simply, you have needs that you would only expect on the Windows PC but would like to have features that are on ios or android tablets in something more useful than an ipad, a Surface Pro is the most bang for buck, along with other Windows 8 tablet PCs out there. Paying over 900 dollars and not be able to connect a digital camera to or a even a smartphone to isn't worth the money. If it were so, then people would probably also buy DVD rewinders....

That's all nice and dandy. But all I do with the tablet is this:

Navigation within the car (have no nav system) and plan trips
Phone calls with VoIP (GrooveIP)
Check mail when on the go
Watch TV news of my local stations in Europe
Watch old TV shows and Comics
Listen to Scanner Radio - mostly airports
Watch and listen to my own Music and Video files when on the go

For the rest I have 6 PCs of all flavors.

Then don't buy a Surface Pro or x86 based Windows tablet PC. I would do more with a tablet so I don't have to have six different PCs around, I'd rather just keep a beast of a desktop PC and a versatile tablet PC when I'm on the go and need PC capabilities. The rest would be on my Windows Phone, like for GPS navigation with Nokia Drive.

I have a desktop PC that I will be rebuilding from the ground up with a new case later this year along with my Windows Phone and I've done fine. When I go and buy a new PC later next year, it will be a Windows tablet PC.

Never really understood the phablets, they're like big smartphones that can't make calls and can't fit in your pocket.

Walking a field, I came upon a patch of ground where a struggle appeared to have occurred.
Upon further investigation, it seems there were few traces left of a horse that had been beaten to death with clubs and pipes.
I also found remnants of a rider and 3 dogs and the fox they were chasing.

I then thought to myself aloud, "What a bloody mess."

The first thing that matters is that you make a list of your requirements. And don't forget, tabs are for on the go. For at home, PCs are better solutions.

What apps do you really need on the go
What can be better be done on the PC
How much portability do you need - 10" tabs are BIG to carry
Do you need connection everywhere or is WiFi OK
etc., etc.

Why would I want to trade that for my comfy high end desktop with a 22" screen. I am retired and do all my work at home. When I am out on a trip, I have other things to do. An occasional check of the mail, the news of my local station via internet, the weather report, planning the excursions of the next day, navigation in the car and when I am bored at night at the hotel I may watch something on the tab or turn the TV on.

If I wanted to do real work away from home, I would lug one of my laptops. But I have never done that.

Once again it isn't Windows 8 that is the problem, it is the users!

Yep!
What is that supposed to mean. Most of the people I have seen to turn Windows 8 down are experienced Windows gurus. It is just unacceptable that M$ wants to push such a hybrid down our throat.
