Sleep password protection won't turn off!

In Control Panel, Power Options, you can choose to not require a password in the sleep mode. Despite setting it this way, it keeps requiring a password. Bug?

Can you get to it in Advanced Power settings? It may be grayed out in there, but clicking on it offers a way to unlock it.

That image is slid down a little, the setting will be up at the top, right under "Change Settings that are currently unavailable" Click on the "Change" link and it should unlock the "Turn Off Password" to wake thing.

In addition, double check what's in the yellow Tip box at the top of the same tutorial to see if it may apply as well in case it may not be just the password on wakeup.

Where do I find Advanced Power Settings?
I have only found Control Panel/Power Options/Settings which seems to be the place but doesn't actually work. I think it is same place because the words you quoted are there. I have that button selected. Still have to use my password.

It's where your Screensaver is, thats why I posted that image, it shows how to get to it.

Check Shawn's tutorial too, see if there is something in there that's not in the Advanced Power Settings. Actually there are a few other places to check so check the tutorial.

Ok, I appreciate the help, but where can I find "Advanced Power Plan Settings"? It is not in Control Panel and not in the Start menu. I can't go further in the tutorial without the first step!

In Control Panel, Power Options, System Settings, there is a radio button that I have selected that says "Don't require password" when awakening. That is probably what you refer to but it doesn't work as advertised.

I clicked on that message and it went away, giving me hope. Nope. Still have to use password after sleep.
My Control Panel screens don't look like the tutorial but the options are the same.


I notice that some things require that I be logged in as the administrator. I am the only one on this computer, but am I the administrator? Is that why the computer is ignoring my settings?

You're settings look good there, but how about like in step 6 posted above in your "Power Options"?

Steps 1 to 4 in the tutorial I posted above can help show you how to get to the screenshot under step 6.

In your screenshot above, click on "Power Options" in the address bar.

From there, you should see the same as under step 4 where you can click on the Change plan settings link to the right of your selected power plan.

Next, you should see the screenshot under step 6.

I have found your tutorial boxes and they are set to NO for requiring password.
Still requires password. I think something is wrong with my machine.

Ok. Let's double check to make sure that you have the screen saver password disabled.

Next, double check to make sure that you have your account set to be signed in to automatically at startup.

I already had the Screen Saver Enable Password unchecked.

The User Accounts screen has one user and was listed as Administrator. There is no box to check or uncheck as shown in Step 3 and discussed in Step 5.

Ok, give this a try to manually set auto sign in:

1. Press :winkey: + R to open Run dialog, type regedit, then click OK.

2. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon ​

3. Using your account name and password, double-click the DefaultUserName string value on right side, type your user account's display name, and then click OK.

4. Double-click the DefaultPassword string value to modify it, type your password, and then click OK.

   Note

If there is no DefaultPassword value, create the value. To do this, follow these steps:
a. In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String Value.
b. Type DefaultPassword as the value name, and then press ENTER.

5. Double-click the AutoAdminLogon entry to modify it, type 1, and then click OK.

   Note

If there is no AutoAdminLogon entry, create the entry. To do this, follow these steps:
a. In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String Value.
b. Type AutoAdminLogon as the value name, and then press ENTER.

6. Quit Registry Editor.

7. Restart PC.

Followed steps with no difficulties. Restarted PC. Put PC to sleep. Still required password.

Just to triple check, you have screen saver password turned off at the location below as you posted here, but.....

Do you also have it turned off in your advanced power plan settings like below?

I checked again. All set to No in both places.
Should I give up at this point? It is an annoyance but not critical.
