I made custom icons for my desktop apps with the really awesome program OblyTile and slightly modified versions of these icons. I mostly use the start screen like I used the start menu in Windows 7: mostly shortcuts to folders/libraries and semi-commonly used programs.

I can't help but to notice, it seems people tend to segregate metro and Desktop apps.

I know u can't change them directly, i think its possible indirectly but there is a way to change it. You will have to hex edit an application extension(.dll) file.
