Do you want Aero?

I'll be replacing it as soon as there's a decent app to do so.

I want MY machine to look and behave the way I want it to.

Not Microsoft. And not you (generic 'you', no fingers pointed).

I have power to spare and more to run Aero, so it should be
MY choice.

I completely agree. I have always been a huge fan of Aero since Vista came out. Windows 7 just made it look even better. I got Windows 8 on my laptop, but I will not be getting it on my desktop any time soon. It is my primary system and unless I can reproduce the look and feel that I love, I will not be upgrading.

I will not have some fascist come on here and start telling me that my opinion doesn't matter and that my choice doesn't matter and telling me to just flat out 'deal with it' as if it's not even a problem. It is a problem to me, a big problem, so they can just buzz off. Even for my laptop's sake, I will continue to find a way things back that were taken from me in the upgrade.

MS would have gotten much better sales, and much better reviews, and a much better opinion out of a lot more users if they simply kept the choices in, and it would not have hurt them to do so. For Windows 8 (not RT), having 'transparency/blur' checkbox and/or an Aero theme in the personalize panel would have been JUST FINE and would have pleased us all. ALL of us. Third party solutions already returned the start orb, so what I want back is my eye candy.

Why is there such an issue about giving people CHOICE?

Sadly because we live in a world now where people gladly take anything that's wrapped up and given to them without question. And they'll defend the giver for two reasons, they either thrive on always disagreeing - even disagreeing with logic, or they are getting paid for their opinion. M$ doesn't even have to give a reason for taking away your choices, they have plenty of sheep out there doing it for them for free.

Are you doing work all day or moaning about how the "x" button looked better in 7? Its good that Microsoft got rid of Aero. Its redundant now. Nothing you say will change that and Microsoft won't be bringing it back. This is a tablet OS first and foremost.

So now you see? Moaning does nothing. Aero is gone. Permanently. Have all the hissy fits you want. Its not coming back.

That's ridiculous. And the answer to that is simple - I like Aero and that's why I'm running Windows 7 most of the time. I have Windows 8 installed as a secondary OS and I play with it when I have time, but it looks plain ugly and I don't care for tablets. That's why I work with Windows 7.

Personally I loved Aero. I don't really care about the streaks, but I think the transparency really added to the look. These flat, solid colors are ugly. Oddly enough I noticed that Aero Peak is still there, but the button the button is invisible. Just point at the far right side of the task bar and it works just like it used to. Click that empty space and everything is even minimized, just as before.

I have been using win8 as my main OS since the RP was released.
I jumped from RP to RTM pro a few days ago, I am disappointed in the UI changes. RP looked better overall.
I don't miss Aero at all, it kind of looks childish now.

The up/back/forward buttons in "file explorer" look like hell. (what was wrong with the "windows explorer" name?)
Whose idea was it to remove the option of solid color or transparency from the window borders?
Seriously Microsoft, fire that guy(s) who had that idea.

This I will agree with, those buttons are so tiny now. So strange compared to the large tiles buttons.

I definitley miss that beautiful, elegant, Aero.

You know ... I thought I would, but I don't. Win8 imported all of my themes and colors the caption bar and borders appropriately. Those I don't like I can change colors easily. It doesn't take long to get used to at all.

When I go look at Aero on my other machine I don't want to go back ... it looks a bit on the "fuzzy" side if that makes any sense. Think I'll go upgrade that box too. ;-)

Don't miss Aero. Pretty sure MS took it out because of performance issues. Aero obviously didn't jive well with Metro because there is no other reason to take it out.

Don't miss Aero. Pretty sure MS took it out because of performance issues. Aero obviously didn't jive well with Metro because there is no other reason to take it out.

It performed just fine in Windows 7 on every machine I ever used Windows 7 on. Also, the framework that Aero is based on (composited, GPU accelerated desktop) is not only still in use in Windows 8, but was made to be an always-on thing. You cannot turn it off for a game or anything that may otherwise be incompatible with it. All they did was turn off the ability for the window borders to be transparent and also removed the blur filter, neither of which were a noticeable impact on performance. They also use a graphic that's simply a square painted one color, rather than something painted with gradients or detail. That makes ZERO difference in performance, as the images are the same size as aero's images and still have to be loaded into texture memory just the same.

At most, you may be saving no more than 30 seconds of battery life with the change of the theme and having two DWM features disabled. That's not worth it enough to give us the most flat, most ugly, most plain looking theme imaginable to replace something that was once elegant, beautiful, and modern. This new theme looks worse than the look of Windows 3.1 or 9x, at least hardware limitations and the fact that GUIs were a newer thing justified it. In 2012, it's just ludicrous to FORCE this on everyone without giving us an option to restore Aero.

What I wanna know is, why did they keep the unsightly windows 95 look for like 17 years in all versions of Windows up until 7, but they couldn't keep Aero for longer than 5 years? It's obvious Microsoft is locking down choice and forcing everyone to be the same on every device or computer without any say. And their one choice for all? The most ugliest, unsightly thing that I cannot stand to look at.

Interesting article:

Windows Aero: Why I’m Glad It’s Dead | TIME.com

Not saying I completely agree with it though. I did like Aero in 7. I don't really miss it at all in 8, but I can see why some people would. I guess MS just decided that it looked cheesy (not my words) and didn't think the draw on resources (what little resources it may draw now) were worth it. At any rate, I've no doubt that some 3rd party app in the future may restore it.

I do miss aero, but actually I do prefer OSXs look to windows 8 and even windows 7. The transparency and text was perfect for the taskbar.

Just give me a dock and a global menu for the taskbar and I'll call it good.

I never quite enjoyed the OS X look, but I thought it still looked better than aero. Luna (XP ages) was a fine design. I like it more than aero, but the 8 look took a mix of both and made it very nice.
