First of all. I'm new to this forum. I'm all aware of that I could start a new tread, but I'm not quite sure where to put it.
Second. If I had a question about Antivirus software, I would ask so. So unless someone tells me that Kaspersky is the reason for not being able to restore PC, please stick to the topic :)
Yes, and welcome to the forums. Did you find that Kaspersky was the problem? ;)

I don't think Kaspersky was the reason that I were unable to restore my PC, I think that must be an issue when updating to 8.1
Some time ago when win 8 were released, I upgraded from win 7 to win 8 (not clean install) What happened then, was that windows deleted the recovery partition on the reseved space on HDD. I managed to get the recovery file from manufacturer, to recover to factory settings, allthough I thought so until getting updates from manufacturer. The PC was recognized as win 8. I had to do a clean install of win 7 first, then use the recovery file from manufacturer.
In my opinion, something similar has happened when upgrading from 8 to 8.1
I have just done a clean install of win 8 pro, Kaspersky is now working :)

Remember never to have an antivirus installed when upgrading, from 7 to 8, or 8 to 8.1. This is because AV programs will sometimes hinder the upgrade process, corrupting the install. It shouldn't matter having one while doing a restore I wouldn't think, but not too sure. Depends on the individual AV I would suppose.

Take care

Thnx
Most problems solved now, Asus doesn't fill up the PC with a lot of crap, but they have a few things I need to try to get back, that were in the original installation.

Kaspersky support told me to download latest version of AV and install on Win 8 prior to upgade to 8.1 My AV is now working properly, so I should be able to do the upgrade without uninstalling AV. But I will just create a fresh restore point now, so if it fails, I can just restore my PC

You would be better making a n image, rather than rely on system restore.

Windows has a built in imaging program , free version of Aomei backupper is excellent, and there are several others.

For now I'm relying on system, upgrading is ongoing as we speak, I made a fresh restore point :)
