Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

Hi,
I have the problem of sleep too since the update of W8 to W8.1 (Pro Version).
The sleep functionality stops to working exactly after 3 hours of activity.

- I have tried with a fresh install of W 8.1 Pro, same result.
- Tried with Local account, KO after 3 hours of inactivity.
- Another MS account, no result.

And I don't know if you have noticed but if you quit your session, the sleep is working again, don't need to restart the computer.

Sorry for my English but I'm French :)

Bonjour et bienvenue sur le forum. Je parle les deux langues alors si je peux t'être utile, n'hésite pas.

Merci, je n'hésiterais pas :)

I tried your solution irvoh but it seems it's not universal, not working for me :(

Disable printer and file sharing to get the pc to sleep? I think it is time everyone accepts that there is a bug in Windows 8.1 that is causing an issue. In the mean time manually put the pc to sleep and hope that Microsoft fixes it.

I tried a lot of these solutions and none of them work. Disabling file sharing isn't an option.

Yeah, it is responsible for srvnet problem if 2 PC are opened at the same time (1 wireless laptop and a PC for me). I've noticed that long before win 8.1 by chance. As soon as my wireless laptop were opened then my PC wouldn't sleep. By deactivating files and printer sharing on my PC and rebooting... zoom srvnet problem = gone. After Win 8.1, then for a while, I got the sleep issue who left no trace in powercfg /requests. I was screwed again.

I just suggest Noun0 to try it. What do we have to loose?

That is a different issue. I don't show anything blocking sleep and It works for a while and then I think it is fixed but eventually it stops sleeping. If I unplug the router it goes to sleep. There is a bug in Windows 8.1 that is causing this issue. Windows 7 sleeps without a problem and I have given up. There is a bug and none of these solutions will fix it.

I have already tried to disable printer and file sharing, thanks orbitalfenestra.

Indeed, I tried a lot of these solutions too, unfortunately, I think that Deihmos is right.

We've been through this a million times.

For some it works all the time.

For some it never works.

For some it works for a while, stops working, and for various reasons starts/stops working again.

There are fixes for some people (perm and temporary) but no magic bullet fix for all.

Those seeking the magic bullet will be sadly disappointed.

If you need a crude, outdated, tool that works in almost all cases use StandbyHelper

Personally, its not worth arguing over the semantics any more. It's at least an incredibly unstable feature for one hell of a lot of people? Agreed?

No, my wife's Vista sleeps fine!

I don't have a gripe with 8.1 except for this sleep problem. I tried the MS logon again and it slept well for half a day then stopped. Seems like a familiar pattern.

I'm all done. Back to local login and hope that the next update, or win 9, fixes it.

Windows 7 is still the most reliable Windows to date. Even some companies like xprintserver released a Chrome cloud print edition in early 2014 and it says Windows 7!!! lol more than 1 year after the release of Win 8.

Microsoft has written off 8.1. They have decided to postpone valuable updates that were planned for 8.1 and instead put them in 9.0. Feeling being that 8.1 has such a bad reputation now that any new useful features would simply be wasted now on the 8.x platform.

The fact that I see the exact same behavior on my laptop that came with win 8.1 and my other desktop computers means there is a bug. also the fact that the same computers had no problem sleeping until upgrading to 8.1 means there is a bug. A simple restart or even disconnecting the internet and sleeps works again. I don't know how long those that are saying sleeps always works leave their pc on without a restart.

I tend to agree with you but there have been posters here that strongly believe that if it works flawlessly on one pc then it isn't a bug. Frankly it doesn't matter to me if it's technically a bug or not. Like orbitalfenstra just said, its vista and that's what history will label it.

This is a long shot, but I just came up with a new idea I haven't tried before and don't recall being brought up in this thread previously. Many (most?) of us (though not all) have reported that the sleep function works fine when logged on with a local account but doesn't work properly when we're signed on using a MS account. Each time I have installed Win8.1 I have used a MS account up front. I wonder if it might change something if I instead created a local account then LINKED IT TO a MS account? I only learned tonight that this is possible - and the Windows installation will supposedly keep the original local account's username. (I say supposedly because I only read some post elsewhere indicating as much - I don't know this from my own experience.)

I plan on trying this out, but don't have time off for a few weeks so thought I'd post my little idea in case someone else might want to jump on the bandwagon a little sooner. I don't want to interrupt the current user setup on my computer, so I'll probably create a new local user on my computer, create a new MS account then link the two together and do some testing.

Instructions to link a local user account to a MS account on Win8.1 using a mouse:
1) Create and log into a local account on the Win8.1 PC
2) Hover the pointer in the lower right corner of the screen
3) Click on Settings
4) Click on "Change PC settings" (located at the very bottom of the side bar)
5) Click Accounts
6) Click on "Connect to a Microsoft account"
7) Follow the online instructions to complete the connection

Note: There is a security "feature" and MS will either SMS or email (to a separate email address, not the MS account email address) you a code you must enter during this process in order to complete the link. It might be easiest to make sure you've entered a separate security email address and/or cell phone number into the MS account you'll be using prior to this attempt.

@caperjack (and anyone else with an 8.1 install properly "automatically sleeping")
Curious... Do you recall whether you changed a local account into a MS account on your Win8.1 computer which sleeps properly? Or did you create your account initially as a MS account?

It's very definitely a MS account problem here. Local a/c no problem. MS a/c works for a while then won't. Disconnect Internet and sleep works straight away. Re-connect, sleep stops working.
