    Possible SSD failure ?

I have 2 SSD drives, Disk 0 has operating system which is Windows 8.1, Disk 1 has Games on it. Today i was playing a game which is located on Disk 1 and all of a sudden the game went off the screen, no other issues with PC at the time. A message from Steam came up suggesting was possibly due to a file in Steam which i removed then told me to reboot and start Steam again.

At that point i did, but when i tried play the game again it told me needed to be reinstalled. Went to look in File Explorer and the SSD disk 1 was gone, i checked Disk management and Device manager both places the drive was not shown. So i rebooted and went into the BIOS and the SSD was not there and not shown to be installed.

Next step was i opened the case removed the SATA cable then reconnected it, turned on the PC the drive showed up in File Explorer. Could be bad SATA cable, bad SATA Port or SSD is failing.

Happen to take a look in the Event Viewer i received about 7-8 warnings of this An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation.

Then 1 of this Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort1, was issued.

First warning could mean nothing was able to be read from the SSD drive, similar warnings like this can come from blank media ( USB FLASH, Blank DVD..etc..)

Second warning possibly when i reconnected it. I attached text from warnings i saw in Event Viewer. Source file was iaStorA
which is driver for SATA AHCI Controller. No issues with main OS drive disk 0.

Not sure what to try next unless it happens again. Not many new information on these warnings in Event Viewer i can find online most date back 4 years or more, some not similar to drive not seen in BIOS.

Screen capture of SMART for DISK 1 and Read benchmark comparisons for Disk 1 & Disk 0 and Event Viewer warnings attached to the SMART image. Never good at reading SMART data to tell, but other drive seemed similar readings to disk 1.

It could be failing. Ssds are not immune to failure, that's for sure. So far, none of the 5 ssds I have in use (oldest is 5 years old) have given me any problems. Good luck with yours. I'm sure you don't need to be reminded to keep your backups current.

Thanks, this one just has games on it which is backed up on steam client. One time occurrence so far, SSD barely a year old. Reading there is a firmware update, but risky to do. Wonder if make a difference since other is fine with 0S on it. I'm always backed up with with everything, sometimes 2 sources in case backup one goes bad, double secured.

Someone else looked at the SMART data on the SSD and said it showed no signs of failing. Possibly bad SATA Cable or a bad SATA port.
All i did now so far as said before is i unplugged the SATA cable and reconnected it and the SSD worked again, so far has been working.
Some feel a possibility of the motherboard controller, but if that is so would other SSD and HDD i have fail too.
Not familiar with this part of a motherboard, believe it being type of circuit on the board.

When it disappeared i was playing a game,i felt i need to stress the driveto see if the issue happens again. As tried read test but possibly not putting as much stress on the SSD as games, the drive only having games on it Assume have to try a game again for a period of time, i tried for a few moments yesterday after the issue happened and after i regained the drive again.

To me if does this under stress seems to point more towards being a bad SSD even if the SMART shows o.k..
Could be just a coincidence it happened during a game.

Used program recently released from Crucial to also check status of SMART data.http://www.crucial.c...orage-executive

Reading there about a firmware update as both of the SSD's i have are same exact model Crucial CT512MX100SSD for DISK 0 and DISK 1 (one with the issues)
Thinking if this can help me or in any other ways help performance, well i took the chance and updated it using the Crucial Storage Executive mentioned above. All went well no data loss as it is the preferred way to update firmware rather then boot from ISO. Not impressive software by any means, but used primarily for firmware update.

Posted SMART data from Crucial Software and it looks the same as the previous one for Disk 1 also an image of the firmware update info.

Played a game on this Disk 1 SSD for hours to test it which is all that is installed on it. No issues as of yet.

Update: Has not happened in 3 days now after reconnecting the SATA cable, again used the drive for hours on end.
Going to assume this is solved, if not i will make a new post, thanks for all that looked at this post.

Well i assumed wrong as it happened again today, Drive 1 disappeared and this time i replaced the SATA Cable. Let's see how it goes, as next will be to try another SATA port.

Looking at your SMART record, it seems like you have problems with power for SSD not with data cable/port.
Data cable/ port problems show as CRC errors that show as 0 on it but on the other hand Unexpected Power loss count shows value of 180. If you are not hibernating computer, you could go to Advanced power settings and set SSD power savings to Never and see if that helps. It may just not wake up on time on occasion.

O.k. now saying unexpected power loss value being 180 what does that exactly mean in number wise ? I can check other SSD SMART see if shows same values there to because no issues with the other i have in system. 2 SSD 1 for C; and 1 for D: drive which is one with issue and i also have a HDD E: As never use sleep or hibernate, both turned off.

Those settings were always set to never pic below what you mean.

Believe same SATA power cable is connected to all 3 drives to the PSU which is a 750w, has 3 or 4 connections on one cable to the PSU.
Let me check other drives SMART and compare because it is not happening to the others.TY for response.

    Other SSD Drive C:

SSDs use much less power than HDDs even having 3 of them on same power connector is not a problem.
