Solved Possible SSD failure ?

Those are same ones as on Gigabytes site, i have them installed from Gigabyte site, goes in before operating system on thumb drive during custom install. IRST second one on list in picture is just the software, first is the drivers for controller. Same page not shown Chipset drivers are there too. Look under Windows 8.1 64bit you will see all, also have F6 BIOS GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 2011-3 - GA-X99-UD3 (rev. 1.0)

In device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI are listed controller/s on MB, ie. chipset. Under Disk drives are listed SSDs and HDDs. I must have been looking at different version of your MB (didn't click on your link), looks like that one has all inclusive in chipset.

Did you check performance of SSDs ? A lot can be gleaned about their and drivers work from that.

How so performance, showed you read speeds in above posts,i also checked them through Windows Performance monitor ? Explain, gleaned ? :shock:

Asking right person on that, buddy, gathered and searched enough info on this issue. Second time talking to Gigabyte support picking there brains. To them or me does not seem like a driver issue as even BIOS does not recognize it when it goes, does not need a driver for BIOS to see it. Plus other same model SSD works fine.

To them or me not a driver issue, as even the BIOS does not recognize it when it goes, does not need a driver for BIOS to recognize it. Plus the other same model SSD (OS) is working fine. Looked back and read all my posts in this thread, see all i have tried or looked into. Even the Crucial article is showing some......... Glean !

So odds of one SATA port going bad is rare, usually all, the controller on Motherboard. Why with HDD on same port is not disappearing, sometimes it did take up to two weeks for issue to occur again. My thoughts were HDD might not be as sensitive to an issue as SSD was on same port, this saying the port is bad.

Gigabyte asked if i had another SSD to try on the suspected port, i do, but what will this prove if HDD on same port is fine so far. Something i said before about difference in the sensitivity of a connection problem between a SSD and a HDD.

You may be right about HDD in same place, they are much slower so short misfire in communication with it may not affect it same way. It's really frustrating to troubleshoot intermittent problems specially when not occurring regularly. MFG's support is of no real help, they tend to talk down at you and most used advice is to reboot computer. I gave up on them long time ago.

Yes, this was my diagnosis about HDD compared to SSD, you may have mentioned something about sensitivity compared with SSD when i changed the cable then. Gigabyte support then thought the same idea about that. Talking to support over the years i notice, because i have learned more over time too, i feel like i may know almost as much as them. Plus i needed some extra thoughts on this issue and googling this drives you mad after awhile, so many slightly different scenarios and forum opinions and never the exact same issue as yours. Sure people searching this similar issue come to this thread too.

I may either wait a bit longer see if something happens or try another SSD on that suspected port. Been over a week since the swap, hey, took two weeks after the cable change.

Other SSD i have is 250GB, these on the system now are (2) 512GB. One 512GB with issue was used for games, so hate use 250GB for that as will consume most of the drive. Unless i put OS on 250GB move 512GB the original OS drive on suspected bad Port. Again this means another clean install or use Macrium reflect. Unless i just pop the 250GB SSD on blank wait till christmas for it to fail

Sorry, i sounded abrupt as i am bit frustrated being an intermittent issue and hard to solve. Appreciate any advice.

I put a different SSD on port 1 the possible port with the issue to see if problem occurs, about 4 days ago so far all is o.k., keep this post updated.

There you go but now I'm having trouble with one of my SSDs, noticed IO error when trying to make backup with Reflect, seems like there are some bad sectors but at different places according to different programs. Going to safety erase it, fill up with zeroes and put backup back on. If that doesn't help it's going RMA way Monday.

Errors seen in SMART or where ? So far so good been using this SSD for 4-5 days, hopefully time will tell this time, iam getting impatient waiting. Good thing for cloud storage and saves, didn't loose my game saves. When i now for sure, i will RMA the other SSD. Hopefully before Christmas

SMART was clear no indications of anything wrong but Macrium reflect was refusing to make backup because of IO error. Checked with Easus PM and HDD Sentinel and each showed bad sectors but in different places. Windows checkisk didn't show any.
Anyway, I safety erased it, zeroed whole thing again and restored last Reflect backup. Probably because I changed MB after that last backup windows didn't work well so I installed 8.1 again and I'm now in process of installing all the programs again. All is working perfectly again. Must have been a software glitch.

Wait did you say had to change the motherboard ? Never used Macrium Reflect as others swear by it, even for cloning drive. If you restored backup still lost all your software ? As much as it's easier to recover from system image, sometimes there are errors this way. Prefer long drawn out clean install, even though requires hours of putting back all your updates and software compared to image which is more practical. Hope works out well as i do for myself. New version of Macrium Reflect sure you have it.

My old MB died couple of weeks ago so had to get new one. As it was a bit newer, drivers were not same so after first restart screen stayed black after windows started. Macrium backup image was with old drivers. Found it easier to start from scratch. Those windows were started from Win 8 than updated to 8.1 etc. so they are few years old. Lost inexplicably some drivers like for security cameras so it was really right time to start from ground zero. I keep all programs to be installed on spare HDD so all I have to do now is to reinstall the. Problem is, there's more than hundred of them.

SSD have sectors like hard drives, this is what confuses me about SSD, it's just memory chip. Then running chkdsk how it works with them compared to HDD, do you need to use chkdsk on SSD .

SSDs are logically different than spinners but windows still thinks it's the old way. Actually even HDDs have different physical and logical layouts so FW in disks have to convince windows it's all going their way. Other OSes handle that logical part differently.

Yeah no spinning or moving parts. Just didn't think used word sectors for SSD, knows my knowledge of correct words of components and workings of a SSD not in my vocabulary yet. Brings me back to thoughts of when you first put an SSD in system some used WEI to make system recognize what it was, other then a typical HDD sets it appropriately. Not sure really need to do this, saw it somewhere once.

All i know is i use error check within properties of the disk in explorer along with trim command, occasional SMART check.
As we speak, drive has not been playing hide and seek. Have not put all games back on yet or put more Data back on other drive, this is it.

My understanding is the SSD firmware basically sets up the solid state memory similar to a HDD with sectors, cylinders, heads and such. Something like "heads" doesn't really apply but is made that way in the firmware for compatibility. Definitely not like raw RAM just sitting there to be used as needed in a sequential fashion.

Just some of the terms do not seem like they apply to a device with no moving parts, cylinders and heads to me. Sounds like a motor part.
Well SSD are sort of like memory. more similar i felt to thumb drive or SD without the other parts and firmware.
