The never ending disappearing CD-ROM drive

Seems no matter what I do, my DVD/CD-ROM constantly disappears. This has been happening off and on for a while.
Things I’ve done to try to resolve this issue….

    • Replaced the CD-ROM drive (thinking that was the issue)
    • Reinstalled the OS (Windows 8.1) twice
    • Did some Registry tweaks suggested by Microsoft for a disappearing CD drive.
    • Replaced the SATA cable
    • Checked the power supply cables (a few times)
    • BIOS update - currently running the F10 BIOS.
    • Switched drive ports thinking is was a port issue
    • Reset BIOS (a few times)

Nothing seems stick for a while; and now, no matter what I do, the drive now constantly disappears after reboot. Basically, I’ll reboot and this drive will be there, but about 15-20 minutes after the system has been on, the drive mysteriously disappears… not even showing in Device Manager, nor Disk Management.

I even posted the issue in the “Official Gigabyte G1-Sniper-5, M5, B5 owners” thread at overclock.net to see if this is/was a motherboard/BIOS issue but that doesn’t seem to be it.

Any suggestions/help in getting this issue solved would greatly be appreciated. At this point in time it looks like I’ll have to do yet another OS reinstall.

Oh, and system specs are updated and listed. And, no, I’m not overclocking.

    Thanks.

    Hello Drew,

If you haven't already, double check to make sure that you have turned off to hide empty drives to see if that may be the issue.

Thanks Shawn, that solved that issue. BTW I never knew about that switch until now so thanks

Unfortunately, though that issue is solved, there's also the issue of the drive crashing the system when attempting to use (should have posted that as well). Anyway for some odd reason sometimes the system will completely freeze when attempting to use to drive and I'll either have to wait for the system to respond which can take upwards of 10 minutes, or simply have do a re-boot. Very frustrating

Talking to a poster over at overclockers.net, he suggests I try to do a manual install of the CD-ROM driver which sounds good to me, otherwise it seems like yet another OS reinstall. At any rate I no longer think it's a bad motherboard, which was the reason for my post at overclockers, but... ???

    Your thoughts?

    Thanks.

    One issue down at least.

Have you already installed the latest SATA and chipset drivers for your motherboard?

Yes. In fact I was just checking to make sure I had the latest, though this was done a while ago. I'm kind of a latest driver junkie

At any rate it seems the switch didn't work as the drive disappeared once more after I ejected a CD I was playing/testing. I hate like heck to have to do an OS reinstall considering all the programs I have to reinstall as well but it's looking more and more like I have no choice. Before doing that though I'll do an OS repair reinstall and see if that helps. Just need to get the latest disk with the most current Win updates.

    Damn

    Thanks Shawn.

Hopefully a repair install will do the trick to avoid a clean install.

If you wish, before re-installing Windows, you can try:
    1. Download a trial version of: Optimize, tweak, clean, speed up and repair Windows 8 - Windows 8 Manager
    2. Install it and run: Information->Repair Center->Misc. Repair->Fix DVD Drive Icon disappered .....

Thanks, but I'm going to try the repair install first and go from there. Not really a fan of using third party fixers but I may give it a try if the repair install doesn't work in the hopes of avoiding an OS reinstall.

    Thanks.

OK, so here's what's going on...

I've done a myriad of fixes and registry tweaks and even though the drive appears in explorer after re-boot, it mysteriously disappears after about 10 minutes. However I know it's not a power issue because even though the drive isn't appearing in explorer, if I hit the open/close switch on the drive, the bay door opens and closes, confirming the drive is powered.

What appears to be happening is Windows is booting the drive out the system. Very odd.

I'm going to swap the drive with another one I have and see what that does.

Odd. You might also change the power and data cables for the DVD drive to rule them out.
