Do you like the Windows 8 Release Preview?

I like Win8 RP over Win7 because it is so much better under the hood. I find that it boots faster, multitasks better, and uses less resources. There are a LOT more ways of rescuing a broken running WIN8 op sys (which I am fighting on Win7 with my nephew right now). As the the user facing screen trapping such as Metro and "squared off windows", I DON'T CARE. I never liked the start button in Win7 and had ignored it for years. I don't have much use for Metro yet and mostly ignore it (except for the weather app which is great). Yet, I am merrily running along even with a "beta" version of the program!
So many people as getting hung up on the "look and feel" on Win8 which baffles me. I have tried Apple's OS and it looks damn pretty and feels snappy but is so limited and unintuitive (like Metro and charms bar, heh). If "look and feel" were all that counted Apple's OS would be the dominant player.
Win8, even in BETA, works great under the hood. The rest I can live with.

Windows 8 IS great under the hood and that's good enough!

I want a REALLY GREAT desktop OS UI to go with it. I got a so-so tablet UI instead :(

I too have a really great weather app. It's a gadget that takes up about 1/100th of my 24in monitor's screen space and displays tons MORE information than the metro app. It is probably 10 times better in every way as are all my non metro apps on the desktop. :/

Give me Win 8 but get that useless invasive, in-your-face Metro gui out of there. (Charms bar is not so charming either)

I would actually start experimenting with third party tools for removing it but I really don't want to get my hopes up only to have MS make good on their promise to make getting rid of metro "impossible" on release.

To be fair you can multitask quit well in Windows 8, using your normal desktop apps. I can open Outlook on one monitor, IE on my other while playing some tunes in MP just like I did in Windows 7. Its only when you try that with Metro apps that you hit a brick wall. I have two 1280x1024 LCD displays but can only ever have "one" Metro app open on screen. Epic fail for a company that has been around as long as Microsoft, and that makes its bread and butter from its operating system sales.

I like it but am frustrated with the start screen.
The tiles continuously slide around.
It is like rearranging a rubiks cube.
Also, no tile customizations are available yet.
...and cannot edit the start screen background behind the tiles.

If it's such a great system why aren't there many hundreds of members joining this forum to say how good it is? Hmmmmm!
They're having so much fun with the new Metro Interface that they don't have time to write in.
Hell I thought they were so bedazzled by the pretty colors of the Metro, they got off the train at the wrong stop and ended up in the Bronx!

To be fair you can multitask quite well in Windows 8, using your normal desktop apps ... Its only when you try that with Metro apps that you hit a brick wall.
That is exactly my point and why it is ludicrous to say you can multi-task equally well in Win8 as in Win7 with a Start Menu.

To compare the systems fairly, hacked start menus are not included. Why should I have to hack an inferior hybrid start menu to get back what I've already got in Win7?

If you're constantly opening and shutting different programs from the start menu, and switching between 3 or more open programs for spread sheets, etc; you either switch between Metro and the UI, or have mega shortcuts on the desktop or pinned to the task bar. And either alternative is cumbersome to say the least.

There is simply no comparison to having a cascaded alphabetical hidden start menu, which has it all, without clogging your UI or task bar, and is easily accessible no matter how many programs are running.

But then, you already knew that! :thumb:

You can do some interesting things with the metro shell if you learn how to use the mouse effectively.

some examples include:
finding the hot spots and clicking:
top left,
bottom left,
top right,
positioning the mouse pointer to the left side of the screen and move it from top to bottom or bottom to top
(useful if you have many apps running) ...

... left clicking top left of the metro.

You can also put an app on the desktop.
Putting the mouse at the very top of an app until you see a hand,
hold the left clicker and drag it to the right or left and resize,
then (one way) put the mouse in the top left and click to restore a screen (or desktop)

see pic as an example...

Also, pointing the mouse at the top of the desktop until you see a hand,
left click and drag and position to the left or right of screen.

Then (one way) left click bottom left,
to the metro,
click on an app,
and the desktop is combined with the app.

You can also resize the app (left to right or right to left)
to switch between app and desktop.

It's interesting .......

I regret having changed from CP to RP.

CP run fine and RP is giving me many problems. It freezes many times while CP never did.

I clean-installed it twice and it's the same freezing problems. And I don't notice it to be any faster or smoother than CP but exactly the opposite, slower and "clumsy", as if it was short of memory.

I might end up going back to CP.

Hello Kmint.

I am sorry you are having problems with your installation.
There must be issues that can be identified.
I have had zero problems installing or using all flavors of 8.
I wouldn't give up on it yet.

Years ago, ...........
There was a point in time where the only solution to using Windows was to upgrade my computer.

The administrators of this forum have some interesting excellent helpful links that may assist you.

Good Luck!

With all due respect, a cumbersome monstrosity! :(

Try doing it with Studio Manager which has 48 sub-menus.

Sorry! An icon menu will never be as efficient as an alpha-numeric menu, especially when it's cascaded. Writing with symbols went out with the Incas, or whatever. Maybe we should be using American Indian totem poles?

But then I'm only reiterating what's been said mega times already on this forum, so I'll put my stylus ... oooops ... pen ... oooops ... keyboard to rest.

Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and the keys on future keyboards will contain icons instead of letters?
