Alpha, I have noticed that when I try to do ANYTHING with Metro except runs aps, it switches me to the desktop. Try using the desktop for all your programs and use the Metro only for aps, and that should stop the random switching back and forth.

So far, so good. I quite like the interface myself. Definitely seems more responsive and snappier than 8DP and 8CP.

It's becoming less and less of a problem as I pin more apps to my taskbar. Its just lame, for example, I installed office 2007 and all the shortcuts are Metro tiles. So to launch Outlook I have to go down to the corner and click Start to open Metro. Then click outlook and get bounced back to the desktop. Its the same deal with control panel and other apps unless you pin them to your taskbar. Actually, to be honest, now that I've found a few keyboard shortcut keys I can bypass Metro for most of what I want.

It doesn't seem much different to me.

Still get that infuriating Metro stuff which I don't want.

It would be ok if it was an option - an additional feature, but MS is making a tablet o/s with a sort of vague main interface as an afterthought.

Metro is probably ok on a small device that is just being used for consuming content.

However, they have to compete with Apple in that arena - I would be surprised if MS can get much more than 10-15% market share.

At the same time, they have got nothing to offer their existing 1.5 billion users.

On the contrary, the handling of this has pissed off a significant proportion of existing customers.

When 7 first came out i loved it and we had no problems accepting it in our domain at work however the same can't be said for 8, i don't personally mind it and do really like some areas but none of us in our IT dept at work believe it will fit in

W8 is still a no go on my desktop.
Still getting random freezes requiring a hard reset (which also screws with my 7 installation) and blue screens when shutting down+restarting due to my sound drivers. (which are extremely unlikely to be 'Officially" fixed. Gonna try some modded drivers and cross my fingers)

Laptop is fine, but the Dev, CP and RP have never played nice with my desktop *sigh*

    That's basically it.
It would be interesting to hear from someone that is actually running it on a Windows tablet. For me a tablet would be a convenience item. I'd browse the web, do some e-mail, listen to music and maybe watch some videos. I wouldn't be doing spread sheets, or anything else that would be keyboard intensive. The thing is it doesn't seem like there are a lot of Windows tablets on the go. Everything is Android or Crapple. I think most people, like me, are trying it on a desktop or laptop. IMHO no touch screen = poor user experience. It almost seems jekyll and hyde to me. It can't make up its mind if its a desktop OS or Tablet OS, and I think its going to suffer on both platforms as a result.

Hellooo :)

I love Windows 8 , I'm now downloading RP and I will know all about it.
Some people don't like Metro, but it's good. You have a lot of switching but applications can't be better !

Microsoft need to add option so you can switch from Metro to Desktop or from Desktop to Metro.

When I install RP I will test one thing about Metro and if I found way to boot directly to Desktop I will write tutorial.

Sadly the show stopper bugs have already forced my hand - it's gone from the desktop already.

Must be a new record for me

But it does finally answer one question for me - will I be rushing out to buy Windows 8 on release? - No. No I will not.

No, I won't be an early adopter of Win8. And probably not a late adopter either.
Why? Very simple - at least so far I have not seen any compelling reason to change from Win7-64.
Up to now I haven't paid much attention to Win8 because I figured it was far from being finalized so why bother. But now that the first official preview is out I've watched a bunch of the YouTube videos and the most positive comment I can make so far is "ho-hum."
My current dual-screen Win7 system is very productive for me (main screen for viewing/working/design areas and 2nd screen for Properties/Code/Help/File Mgr.); I see no way the Metro interface can improve on this and in fact could only weaken it.
Even if I wanted to (which I certainly don't), switching my 2 LCD monitors to touch-screens would degrade my productivity. I remember the early days of computer graphics when I used a keyboard, light-pen, and button box (this was before mice/trackballs existed); continually reaching up to the screen to select something got to be quite tiring after several hours.
Sure you can use the standard Windows interface in Win8, but what is the justification to switch in that case? I just don't see it.
The people I feel sorry for are the tech support folks in companies who have to take care of lots of users and their systems. They fill fight Win8 tooth and nail because all it will mean for them is huge headaches. Change just for the sake of change is nothing more than marketing hype.
Where's the beef?

a lot of the complaints im seeing are due to the fact that we are all running a RC version of an operating system. one of the biggest things that comes with RC OS's are a lack of compatibility and a lack of development from 3rd parties. Therefore, bugs are going to exist, and there is a ton of switching to desktop mode due to the fact that we are all running mainly Win7 style programs. Once Win8 is officially launched, we will see metro apps for programs like Office, Chrome, anti-virus, and probably everything else you can think of, which will prevent the switching from metro to desktop so frequently (and yes I realize that's awesome to some people, but to others, metro is a ****hole).

I personally love metro and love the whole idea of Win8. Desktop mode provides a faster, more efficient Win7 which provides support for older programs that we all need to run, where I do see metro being the first step towards a new generation of operating systems. Now, I'm too young to have ever used a command line OS (Win 95 is my first computer experience), but the switch to a 95 UI was essential for the development of computers, and a switch to a metro UI is that next innovative step. If it works, who knows - it could flop majorly and MSoft or Apple come out with an entirely new OS UI. But I like the initiative Microsoft is making and I like the OS.

I love the RP! It's SO much more smoother than past previews! The Microsoft app issues I had in the Consumer Preview are gone. Some of the apps are better, and there actually are some pretty cool metro apps out there, for example, Cocktail Flow. ;) Coolest thing ever!

IE 10 metro is better and I use it more than the Desktop's actually. Everything that didn't work in the CP and DP, like devices and programs, all work in the Release Preview for me.

Honestly, I'm actually considering pulling the kill switch on 7....

Only 47 voters

The fact that the whole of Windows 8 Forum can only muster 47 voters to register their approval or disapproval for a new release Windows system is an indictment in itself!

If it's such a great system why aren't there many hundreds of members joining this forum to say how good it is? Hmmmmm!

Like many other "no" voters, we want to get on board, but the system in it's present form is untenable!

It's not about speed of boot up, or even speed of system operation ... it's about ease of accessing and manipulating data ... without having to do hacks which aren't necessary in Win7.

I would certainly think most people willing to test this OS know full well about forums online.

I find the new release better than the cp but there still is nothing to rave about imho. It's clunky as hell for a desktop, without an option to kill metro it will not go far I think.

Assuming the existing members of Windows 7 Forums know of the existence of Windows 8 Forums ... I did yonks ago ... then explain the vast discrepancy in the number of members between each forum:

Windows 7 Forums: 204,265

Windows 8 Forums: 5,441
