Solved Can't network but can share drive

Look in Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel. You should be able to see right there if your profile is Private. Also, use the change advanced sharing settings link. You should be able to change to Private there if you are not using Private already. And, turn on Network Discovery and file and printer sharing here. Don't touch the HomeGroup settings.

You just hit the nail on the head - I cannot look at those settings; this is what I have been trying to get to and cannot because it says "not connect to network".

Edit: Before I mislead you, I can get to the "Advanced sharing settings" and it lists "Private", "Guest or Public" and "All networks". Is there someway of identifying the setting from there?

I missed this before, but under"Advanced sharing settings" it does say "Guest or Public (current profile)", sorry. So how do I change it?

Can you get to change adapter settings? If yes, then any adapter settings the more or less obviously need changing, including renaming. Don't change anything that you don't really understand.

I can get to the adapter setting. The name is listed as Wi-Fi and my network is SSIDMY and "Sharing" is not enabled.

The top box, which I think you are calling sharing, is not checked on my Win8 either, and I am having not network problems. You might try checking this box to see if things improve. Have you ever changed anything in the "Properties" section. If so, then change it back.

I have changed this and it has not helped. It seems to be the Private/Public issue and I cannot find a way to change them.

Try running Diagnose from your adapter settings. For the XP, try temporarily removing/disabling/disconnecting all network/internet connection possibilities to the network/internet to see if anything changes (not likely to have any effect, but who knows?)

I have had the XP turned off for awhile and the diagnostics came up with nothing.

User is confused here, the sharing box on the network adaptor properties is for sharing the connection, it has nothing to do with sharing files.

Private network is what you want, not public.
To change from public to private you can follow the link below although I doubt that is the actual problem here.

And you do not use Homegroups when working with XP as it has no way to connect with Library's anyway, this is why I mentioned that the Workgroup names need to be the same. To share file you would also need to set up the NTFS permissions on both of those machines in order to allow for sharing, I'm hoping that you already know how to do this?

Instead of all this guess work about the connection, why not post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from this machine so we can see what the problem is. Just open an elevated command prompt and type ipconfig/all then hit enter, save a screen shot using Windows built in snipping tool.

Have you been to the Dell site to obtain the latest Windows 8 drivers for your Dell Inspiron 1750 ?

Well according the ipconfig you have a valid IP and should be online. I'm assuming that you have entered two valid DNS servers into your routers set up page?

This is a strange problem, you are connected but it's showing that you aren't for some reason, is this wireless network secured?

Do you have any third party anti virus or firewall's installed on this system?

I am only using WEP and the router works fine on Win7 and XP and has been online for almost 3 years. If connecting to the internet only, Win8 works fine. All programs came from MS. Once I had Comodo firewall installed, but removed it; I just ran CCleaner and there was not any latent issues from Comodo in the registry.

Ok with WEP security Windows 8 will most likely not deal with that very well. You need to change to WPA2 security with AES encryption in your routers set up page. None of the Windows 8 drivers will work properly when using WEP security.

As for Comodo firewall, you may need to uninstall that using the special uninstall tool, CCleaner may not work for that.
