The official way of storing them is called a Service Pack. It appears they have stopped doing it that way though. Maybe this will be of use though, https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/down....aspx?id=42335 It's dated 2014-05-05 so my guess is its only update 1? If you hunt around you may find a more up to date download. Who knows, maybe the Media creation tool will be updated to the latest version. The other older download was updated eventually.

MSDN is likely too expensive for a lot of people. A company could afford it but your average Joe isn't going to pay out for it. It's a shame they killed TechNet, that was the poor mans MSDN. As an MVP I had both. I still have my TechNet keys but can't get any new ones or download anything from TechNet. I'm not sure why the Download section is still there, everybody's subscription must have run out by now?

This Windows 8.1 installation media also accepts Windows 8 product key (both Retail and OEM). The UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8 product key is automatically detected.

That's nice to hear, the previous 8.1 ISO's wouldn't use 8.0 keys for install. So they now work like the ones you get with the Media Creation Tool? Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help Even better actually as you won't need separate Core and Pro install media.

But if you have the UEFI firmware embedded Windows 8/8.1 Core product key and you want to install Windows 8.1 Pro, then you need to use the PID.TXT or EI.CFG file, if you are installing from a Windows 8.1 with November Rollup (12/15/2014 ISOs), because otherwise the UEFI firmware embedded Windows 8/8.1 Core product key is automatically detected.

Yes, that's why I use PID.txt files on my laptop so I can skip Core and install Pro. I do all my installs from USB thumb drives so its an easy edit. However, if your trying to reinstall Windows 8 on a friends laptop the auto install of Core or Pro is a good thing. Especially if you don't know what was on it in the first place. Or it was windows 8 and your installing 8.1. no messing with generic install keys and having to read out the OEM key with a utility.

I have custom install thumb drives for each PC I own. I add a PID.txt file to each one to save having to type in a product code. Not all of my PC's have a UEFI BIOS and it helps me keep track of what TechNet key was used on what PC. I add other OEM info too, to make the install custom to that PC.

This is interesting. I just clicked on the Create Media link here Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help and I get this.

    Service Unavailable

HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

I am hoping that MS is updating the ISOs

    Hey Jim,

It's working for me currently. You might give it a try to see if it'll work for you now.
