Windows 8.1 Aug Update Released (KB2975719)

  1. #51

Aha !!!! That's why I got an update for Tablet PC with last month's updates and I was wandering why, since there was not a single Tablet even in whole neighborhood let alone close to my computer or ever connected to it. It has "Windows Journal.lnk" in that folder and it doesn't lead anywhere. Really which dipstick calls my full size tower server case with 3, 22" screens "Tablet" ???

Then a blue or green color depending on the laptop when its charged to full capacity. Even when the laptop is turned off.
As far as power led indicators are concerned, they show just as they would in a normal scenario.
It's just that my laptop is not charging, battery getting low.

    I'll explain:

Only AC plugged - white led

    AC plugged in with battery:
In power off & power on - white led

No amber led (the one for charging in my lap) anytime during several attempts.
I still don't think it was one of the Windows updates that did it. If the laptop is turned off, how could the OS affect whether the battery charges or not? An update actually damaging hardware is pretty remote these days. I wish I new what to tell you to try. About all I can think of is make sure nothing is blocking one of the battery terminals. Lint or paper etc.
Okay, I'll try that one out,

May be it's just a coincidence that it happened

I had already backed up disc image before downloading the update, have to try it soon or do a restore.

Note: now when i shut down lap totally & plug in lap with battery to AC supply, power led shows as it's charging.

But, I have not found any problem with power led even while system was on - the battery is not charging that's all, with no errors in the battery icon in system tray nor any abnormal changes in power led.

It's just that- everything showing up is normal but the lap is not getting charged.
Some laptops won't charge if you unplug and plug back in from from laptop input. Try to unplug and plug in from power outlet to see if it charges.

I tried the unplugging & plugging of AC adapter from plug point all these time,

But as you reminded of this one, I'll try unplugging DC jack laptop input.

If you decided to add a touch screen, and actually use the touch features, you might actually want to enable the tablet features. When I say "you" I don't mean you specifically, just a general you. That's my guess as to why those features are there and get updated. There are lots of stuff listed in add remove features that are disabled by default. All depends on what your doing with the PC I guess. Some are installed across all platforms and thus get updated, even if your not using them.

Yeah, the Windows Journal (which I don't have installed) security fix needs the Tablet PC (which I don't have) folder in order to install.

Having created the Tablet PC folder, I'm now getting "We couldn't complete the updates, Undoing changes", a repeat of the KB2919355 fiasco that's been running since May of this year (see the thousand-plus message threads over on the Microsoft Community Forums for more on this one).

This isn't meant to be a smart @ss remark, but when you do non standard things to your OS it can have repercussions. It might be time to try doing a Refresh or running the system file checker sfc /scannow. That may put back the missing files and let you get on with doing the updates.

That's already been suggested, in infinite variations, in the threads on the MS support forums. It works for a small number of users, but not for most. The failure is much deeper than that, there are reports from people trying to update week-old PCs (i.e. fresh from the store, no changes made) and the update failing. The only advice still being given now, from both Microsoft tech support and MVP's in the forums, is reformat+reinstall. Since many of the users have machines with Win8 preinstall partitions and one of the cute side-effects of the 8.1 update is to corrupt the preinstall image, there are a lot of unhappy users...

    Beware this update

For people who haven't seen the reports yet, this update is causing BSODs. So perhaps the failure to install is just your PC protecting itself from malware. Like the notorious KB2919355, we may have to wait until version 3 before we get one that works (KB2919355 went through three re-releases over a period of months as MS tried to get a fully working version out).
