I'm having trouble getting 2 out of 3 programs to start at startup.

    I've tried:
    1. Adding a shortcut to startup folder
    2. Confirm it is on CCleaner startup programs
    3. Confirm it is listed under startup tab in task manager

I dont see the Run and RunOnce folders in Option 3 (registry settings)

Hello itisthumper, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Do these programs require to "Run as administrator" (elevated)?

If so, then that is the problem. Elevated programs are not allowed to run at startup by default in Windows for security reasons. A workaround for this would be to use the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut that doesn't get a UAC prompt, then add that elevated shortcut into your Startup folder.

    Hope this helps,

    Startup Shortcuts

I have a Surface Pro 2 with Windows 8.1 + Update. I am trying unsuccessfully to get startup shortcuts to work per Option Two above. I have a simple shortcut to run taskmgr.exe. If I copy this shortcut to either of these two directories, nothing happens at startup. It works fine with my Windows 7 laptop.
    C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I have tried placing other shortcuts here as well. It seems that the "startup function" is not working.

    I would appreciate any help.

Additional info: Surface is set to boot up at Start Page, but I move to Desktop immediately and wait for Startup Shortcuts to work, but with no success.

Hello David, and welcome to Eight Forums.

What's happening is that in an administrator account, Task Manager will "run as administrator" by default. Windows will not run an elevated program at startup by default, and is why nothing happens with in the Startup folder.

If you like, you can use the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut for Task Manager, then place that elevated shortcut in the Startup folder to be able to have it run elevated at startup.

    Startup Items in Windows 8

Brink, thank you for your response. I created the "elevated" shortcut per your tutorial named "My Task Manager".
The shortcut to the shortcut executes this: C:\Windows\System32\schtasks.exe /run /tn "My Task Manager".

I don't know what the "/tn" flag does.

The shortcut seems to work at startup at this location: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

But not at this location: C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I would like it to know how to make it work for "User-Name" only.

I don't recall having this problem in Windows 7. I thought I used ordinary shortcuts, copied into the Startup directory.

    I would appreciate your advice.

    Hey David,

The /TN flag is short for "Task Name". It's used to specify to run that task.

Did you set the program to "Run as administrator", or does it do this by default? If you set it to do so, then you could unset it, and it should run normally then.

Is there a way to see the registry locations of each start up program? In all other windows MSCONFIG on the start up tab always shows the locations. Windows 8 does not. It is frustrating as it is a vital tool I use in virus removal.
