Option One disables auto arrange by default.

If you click on the auto arrange option, does it then get checked and auto arrange files in that folder again?

    Then something it not right.

Is this inside a library by chance? If so, libraries are not affected.

No I don't know anything about a Library function. The address of this particular folder I've been working with is C:\aa_graphics\newPics

In that case, please go ahead and post some screenshots showing what you are seeing instead to see if it may reveal anything.

I'm not sure what screenshot would be helpful. I can't get a shot of the View menu you get when you right-click the explorer

That shows that you are using Details view instead of Extra Large Icons, Large Icons, Medium Icons, Small Icons, or Tiles for the Auto arrange and Align to grid options.

I understand that you can't change it in Details view, but I thought you'd be able to use that feature in details view.
Here's a screenshot in tiles view

You can temporarily change the view, click on Auto arrange in the context menu to check it, then change the view back to what you like.

If by context menu, you mean the menu you get from the View menu, that you get when you right-click the explorer, that's what I've been doing.

Disable auto-assort in Performance & Maintenance
It seems that, as in W7, you have to make changes to disable auto-assort, so files can be moved to desired position in a folder. Does anyone know if the procedure is the same as W7 please? I know Google will find that but does't say for W8.
