    Repair fail

    Hi Brink,
The reason I want to do non-destructive Win 8.1 is in my system properties in system restore, I encounter "could not create the scheduled task for the following reason: Transaction support within the specified resource manager is not started or was shut down due to an error. (0x80071A91)" . This includes unable to install any windows update. I really want to do a non destructive install.

If I could not do a non-destructive repair, what is your advice: should I do a refresh or clean install based on what I described above. My Windows disc is a Windows 8 OEM which was later updated to Windows 8.1. Do I use the disc to perform a refresh/clean install

    regards,
    Andrew

    Repair fail

    Hi Brink,
One more thing... is there any thing I can try to succeed in non-destructive windows 8 install despite a failed install on the window components causing windows to revert to my original Windows?

    thanks
    Andrew

You could try a refresh first, but you will need to reinstall all desktop apps afterwards.

If that doesn't help and you have to do a clean install, then you could download a Windows 8.1 ISO file using OPTION ONE below that you can create a bootable USB with to install and activate with your OEM Windows 8 product key. At least this way you could directly clean install Windows 8.1.

    Thanks Brink.
    Awesome article you have written.

Considering the error I have i.e. "could not create the scheduled task for the following reason: Transaction support within the specified resource manager is not started or was shut down due to an error. (0x80071A91)" in system restore and then trying to fix it with DISM and deleting CLFS logs to no avail - Do you recommend I just go for a clean install?

I highly suspect the above error caused the failure of the non destructive install.

    many thanks,
    Andrew

A clean install would give you the best results. Just be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first.

    Hello Jscags,

Is this a retail copy Windows 8.1 DVD?

This won't work if it's an OEM factory recovery type installation media.

Correct, but you can use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to easily get an ISO though.
