You should have at least seen step 9.
I do not know how to check the disk version, whether it is oem or retail or ... modified or not.
The only info I have is the torrent description that says that it is non-modified and downloaded from MSDN.

However I found a way to get to repair
In the root of the install disk there is a folder named SOURCES and in it is the file installprep.exe which gives all the steps described in your tutorial!

Thank you for your help and swift answers!

    Best regards,
    Vladimir

Ah, a torrent copy could most likely be why then. No telling if it's modified or what else may have been added to it.

Did you Windows come preinstalled on the computer?

If so, you could do a factory reset instead.

If not and this is a retail copy of Windows, then I would recommend to download an ISO directly from Microsoft instead.

I did a in-place repair install in the summer of 2013, back in the first couple of pages of this thread, and may have to do another in the near future. The primary reason is that "Run as administrator" checkmarks are not holding under Compatibility tab in Properties, and so far from threads on this forum and MS Community there doesn't seem to be a fix that solves it here. I'm currently running 8.1.1, but started with the Win 8 CD. I assume that means I need to create a 8.1.1 CD or USB stick to run the repair. Will a download of the current version on the MS site do for that purpose? Thanks,

Looking at the Win 8.1 site and here, it says that a product key for 8.1 is needed, 8 itself won't do. Another approach to this? Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help

    Hi Shawn,

    Great work!
I ran DISM restorehealth and got error 800f0906 "could not download source files" and so after much researching and time lost I decided to do the repair install you suggest and am facing the following difficulty: I upgraded my windows 7 (UEFI) with a retail DVD for win8 Pro x64 (non UEFI) and then did a windows update to win 8.1. How can I repair or better still, how can I get a reliable win 8.1 update ISO to do what you recommend? Or is there a solution for DISM restorehealth not being able to find a source image? Ah I also ran scanhealth and it said that it was recoverable....ran StartComponentCleanUp also and the message was that the Component Store was corrupt....soooo....sorry for the bad translations, my win 8.1 and 8 are in Brazilian Portuguese so I had to translate the DISM messages. Thank you so much for your great work!

IN TIME: It all started with failed download (just this one KB3001237) in Windows Update and SFC /scannow not fixing some corrupt files.

    Hello dreamhouse,

If you like, you could use Option One in the tutorial below to download a Windows 8.1 ISO file to use to do a repair install with.

Thank you again....another question: If I want to do a clean windows 8.1 install, can I use this DVD in case I want to do an UEFI install? Or what should I do?

I would recommend to use a UEFI USB flash drive created from the ISO instead.

Afterwards, it'll be straight forward to do a clean install with UEFI.
