Hey Microsoft, let's get "Refresh", "Reset" fixed.
No sense in having major features, if they don't work.

More than half of the icons you have there are not Metro UI apps and belong to the desktop which makes no difference from running the program in either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 except for the fact that you have to switch over to Start Menu to access the program icon and switch back to the desktop when the program has loaded...complicated? Yes.

No. When one opens a Win32 legacy desktop program via a tile on the Start Screen it automatically shifts to the desktop portal app and opens, even if the desktop has not been opened yet or one closes it prior.

Then by all means Windows 8.1 is just Windows 7 in a different shell with more features and a slight learning curve, which goes to say Windows 8.1 is just as good as Windows 7 but better then Windows 7 it's certainly not.

8/8.1 are far, far better IMO. http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/16379-real-quality-boot-time-8-verses-7-a.html

Biggest problem is that too many folks put an equal sign between UI and OS and that is simply not true.

Having touch enabled hardware is not the only thing Windows 8.1 can take advantage of, I just happen emphasize on the more important features Windows 8.1 has to offer for hardware built for the OS and I would have to say multi-monitor solutions is one of them alongside smaller screens with high resolutions (DPI scaling for tablets).

Thus I can see where you're coming from having much success with Windows 8.1 and having two or more monitors but then even solely speaking on the average consumer, multi-monitor setups are still rarity especially with the slower PC sales these days and ever pacing economy decline plus the fact that it's not a necessity to have more than one monitor for a PC setup.

As a conclusion like I've always said unless you have specific hardware setups tailored for Windows 8.1, just a enthusiasts or can get Windows 8.1 for significantly cheaper than Windows 7 (for new OS upgrades from XP/Vista) and all the drivers for your hardware is available for Windows 8.1 (not worth going through the trouble of waiting for drivers to come out).

Then by all means Windows 8.1 is just Windows 7 in a different shell with more features and a slight learning curve, which goes to say Windows 8.1 is just as good as Windows 7 but better then Windows 7 it's certainly not.

Hi there
All versions of Windows are basically a GUI with a different shell - enc first windows release !! 1.01 (in a VM of course).

Once the underlying DOS was eliminated ( I think in Windows 98) then the kernel has remained essentially unaltered ever since then apart from the addition of 64 bit processing and better security and new hardware drivers. I'm sure if one were to "reverse" engineer parts of the windows kernel it would probably contain quite a lot of code from Windows NT.

Cheers

@ Jimbo; Windows 9X had DOS, Windows 98 had MSDOS 7.1 I believe. ME had 8.0? The 9x family killed the requirement to install DOS first but it was still there in one form or another. It was pretty well eliminated with Windows NT and the NT kernel and NTFS file system. There is a command shell there but its not a true DOS environment. Some people still call it DOS though. This post may sound like I'm nit picking but that was not my intention. :)

I note that the article says:

"Surely, Microsoft has fulfilled its promise, but did it in its own way: pressing the left button now takes the user to the start Metro screen. And to open the familiar “Start” menu you have to make a right click on it."

I never upgraded, so I'm still using 8.0; but I always thought that, in 8.1 (like 8.0), the old Start Menu isn't available at all.

Yes you are correct, it doesn't do what he says. You get a menu with some of the options found in control panel. Programs and features, Power options, Device Manager, Disk Management, etc. It doesn't expand out or include stuff like all programs.

I think they might have been referring to right click on the start screen which takes one to the Windows 8 start menu, whether or not one believes it is a menu, whatever.

edit: Or at least it used to (in 8) expose the All Apps button.
Now, ok, not so, ... :( down arrow now.

Oops, had to re-read, I was mistaken. It was all about 8.1 / 8.2, sorry about that.

 I keep switching between 8.1 and server, which uses the 8.0 model.

How about fixing FILE HISTORY, M$ answer to the Windows 7 Backup? Guess what? FILE HISTORY does not work..... you keep a watch on it, and it will DUPLICATE ALL YOUR FILES in the Library backup.... over and over again.... even if you never make any changes to them!!! So... yeah... it DOES backup your files......... yeah....... toooooooooo many times! It did it in 8.0 and in 8.1.

They really need to fix it.... it has so much promise.......... to be a piece of crap ! (For those that don't believe me, search on Google....... many have this problem......... and you can hear the Crickets over M$'s response....... None ).

My view, this should be eliminated from Windows.
It's another bloat that should be handled by 3rd party specialists.

Apologize if I offend, but system imaging is much better handled by companies
that only do imaging, file preservation and / or data protection.

Another inflammatory argument I will make, Microsoft is not responsible for the protection of ones files!

I think you're correct. It is referring to the Power User Tasks Menu, which has been added to and with some configuration as well in 8.1.

Not sure why she would refer is as the "familiar “Start” menu", for it doesn't resemble the original Start Menu other than it's a menu.

Not quite sure if you know > When on SC, pushing Tab key then Enter opens All Apps. 2 Tabs then enter gets to account menu. 3 is back to tiles. In fact tabbing around in the new UI works just as well as in the old.

Microsoft Windows 8.2 Scheduled For January 2014

Although Windows 8.1 was officially launched last month, it looks like many things still need to be fixed to attract more users. Apparently Microsoft is also aware of that as the company is preparing a major update expected to be unveiled in early 2014.

That story from NextPowerUp is just a quote from the first link in this thread. They show their source is from that article. MS is expected to release a GDR upgrade around that time for their phones but we won't see 8.2 until the end of next year which was the original update schedule from MS.

Yes. I love to move around with keys. It's super fast.
Me too - and in fact it eased my way into Windows 8 that many of the old keystrokes I've learned over the years still worked when it wasn't obvious from the UI how to do things. (Eg. Ctrl-P to print, Alt-F4 to close). Although it was fine with me, I think people who tried to use the UI to get around were short-changed, at least in 8.

I cringe, however, at those that have disabled tifkam,
because there are a great deal of NEW features that exist NOW.

I still have tifkam enabled and even kept the Reader app rather than installing Adobe Reader or whatever (although the next time I need to read or view a PDF alongside another app, I think Adobe will be coming back).

However I do wish Microsoft would include the ability to put tifkam apps into a Desktop window, or arrange them more flexibly. 8.1 is a step in the right direction but still not good enough in that respect. If they did this, it would be more attractive to developers to build Store Apps.

You see many articles comparing the number of apps available in the Windows Store compared to the number of apps available in iTunes or Google Play or whatever it is, but they seldom mention one big competitor to the Windows Store which is the Windows Desktop.

If you want to write a video player app (just in case there aren't enough yet), or perhaps a game, then fine, write it to work in Windows Store.

But if you want to write a utility app to support development, testing, and many other work-related tasks where people need to see two or more apps at once, then why would you write a Store app when you can you write it for the Windows Desktop where people can arrange it flexibly and it's more useful to your customers? If they want to look at it full screen, you can still make a Desktop app full-screen.

To each his own... but when I took a look, I saw nothing that tickled my fancy. Mind you, the install process was so excruciating that I wasn't really inclined to give it much of a chance...
