Windows 8.1 Version Information

It's almost impossible to recreate a hash other than from the original source - that's why MSDN lists those for verification

:ditto: To what Superfly said. The odds are it hasn't been modified if the hashes match. It would take uber skills to pull that off, if even possible.

Thank you both, now it's safe to assume the file is legit (not tempered) as the same hash is posted in How to update Windows 8.1 setup USB with Update 1 by genet

Please have a look at the screenshot

10-16-201411-33-47AM_zps9b3adcbb.png

Would I be able to clean install with above mentioned .iso?
Should I use 334NH-*****-*****-*****-D3VPT or Y9NXP-*****-*****-*****-9D6TC during install?

I apologize for all this nag, and thanking everyone in advance

I don't know what the difference is between the two keys you posted is but, If your 8.0 OEM key is a Core key use the Generic 8.1 Core key, if it's pro use the generic 8.1 Pro key. The key you enter determines what version is installed. If you install Pro and then try to switch keys to activate it will not accept a 8.0 Core key and vise versa.

hi , it doesn't show core because there are only 2 version sold to non business consumers, win8 and win8 pro , so if it doesn't say pro ,then it core .as for single language, it means just that ,to have more language options you would have to install the language pack ,like in the link below.hope this helps a bit ,
Language packs - Microsoft Windows

Right. The two would be identical except for the number of languages you could switch between without an additional download. The single language would be useful for very low end devices where there's very little storage and you want to cut the size of the OS footprint as much as possible.

Let's just clarify this:
  • In Windows 8 & 8.1 and Windows 8 Pro / 8.1 Pro the display language can be changed by downloading and installing a language pack. It is for instance possible to buy an Italian Windows 8 / 8.1 and transfer it to Hungarian using a language pack.
  • Downloading and installing language packs in Windows 8 / 8.1 Single Language is not possible, they can only be used in their original (single) language. If you buy a Portuguese Windows 8 Single Language, it will always remain Portuguese, its display language cannot be changed, language packs cannot be installed.
  • Single Language and Core versions need their own version specific product keys. A Single Language product key does not work in Core version and vice versa.

As far as I know the Core is not an official term used by Microsoft but instead it is just a word Windows users call the basic version of Windows 8 and 8.1. The Core version simply means it's not Pro or Enterprise but the most basic version of Windows 8 & 8.1. Forget the whole word, the only important fact for you is if you have a Windows 8.1 Single Language version or not. If yes use Windows 8.1 Single Language product key, if not use Windows 8.1 product key or Windows 8.1 Pro product key respectively.

Windows 8 & 8.1 Single Language is always a "Core" version. It is useless to speculate about which product key to use with it: it only accepts Windows 8 (or 8.1) Single Language product keys.

Product keys are edition and version specific. To install and activate a Windows 8.1 Single Language you need a Windows 8.1 Single Language product key.

Again question remains why are two separate generic install key?

Product keys are edition and version specific. To install and activate a Windows 8.1 Single Language you need a Windows 8.1 Single Language product key.
Well the laptop came installed with Windows 8 (OEM) that I upgraded through store - unfortunately at that time I never cared about version rather only after news started circulating that those having OEM Windows 8 could head for clean install of 8.1 with generic key that could be activated with original OEM 8 key

Anyway I will give it a shot, in worst scenario I have to restore with recovery USB and go through store to upgrade to 8.1 will get back after weekend

Thank you

I apologize for all this nag, and thanking everyone in advance

You will need the above iso and the generic CoreSingleLanguage=Y9NXP-*****-*****-*****-9D6TC key to install - then activate with the key you have retrieved from the bios.

The en_windows_8.1_with_update_x64_dvd_4065090.iso uses 334NH-*****-*****-*****-D3VPT - your single language key will not activate that installation.

To confirm what has already been said...

Windows 8.x (aka Core) and Windows 8.x CoreSingleLanguage are different editions and therefore each require different keys - much like Windows 8 requires a different key from Windows 8.1 (for installation anyway)

Hope this helps and good luck.

As far as I know the Core is not an official term used by Microsoft.

Kari, Core is officially how pkeyconfig.xrm-ms stores it and verified when called by pidgenx.dll during installation.

I searched the Interwebs for something to confirm the use of Core in one way or another and found this, that's why I used expression "as far as I know...":

Windows 8
Windows 8 is the basic edition of Windows for the IA-32 and x64 architectures. Documentation obtained from the ImageX tool and Paul Thurrott's book on Windows 8 also refer to this edition as "Core".[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3][/SUP] This edition contains features aimed at the home market segment and provides all of the basic new Windows 8 features including the Start screen with semantic zoom, live tiles, Windows Store, Internet Explorer 10, InstantGo, Microsoft account integration, the Windows desktop and more.
(From Windows 8 editions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.)

Good to know it is used officially, I stand corrected :).

If it doesn't say Pro its Core. You have 8.1 Single Language, which is the Core edition.

EDIT: 8.x Single Language and 8.x Core Single Language are the same thing.

    en_windows_8.1_with_update_x64_dvd_4065090.iso
    CRC32: 46BC7825
    MD5: CDADC5A76634651770A365F457702803
    SHA-1: 4652DC6EBFEBE02C6A63E167C36E3FAEDFB93999
  • Which generic key should I use to install - Core: 334NH-*****-*****-*****-D3VPT or Core Single Language: Y9NXP-*****-*****-*****-9D6TC
  • Would I be able to activate with embedded OEM key (I've retrieved)
Thank you

If it doesn't say Pro its Core. You have 8.1 Single Language, which is the Core edition.

EDIT: 8.x Single Language and 8.x Core Single Language are the same thing.
I will repeat previously asked question about having two different generic install key logically there should be only one if Core and Single Language are same.

Please have a look at Superfly's response above in Red Text Color (I changed)

As a last resort if I reset my laptop to Windows 8 using recovery USB would I be able to create/obtain .iso for Windows 8.1 Core Single Language (English US) for a clean install? What would be the steps? i.e. do I've to install all the drivers go through all the updates, etc., etc., ... At that time would it be necessary to to take the route of App Store?

I would appreciate comprehensive step-by-step guidance for this please

Thank you

Your really confusing me now, I thought you already had an ISO?
I repeat I have the above mentioned .iso and would like to confirm, it didn't accept Core Single Language: Y9NXP-*****-*****-*****-9D6TC key, I will go at length nuke system and install using Core: 334NH-*****-*****-*****-D3VPT to see if it will activate with OEM in-built key next weekend, will update the outcome

Thank you

Windows 8.x (aka Core) and Windows 8.x CoreSingleLanguage are different editions and therefore each require different keys - much like Windows 8 requires a different key from Windows 8.1 (for installation anyway)

Yes 8.x Core and 8.x Core Single Language are two different versions, one is single language and one isn't.
What I said is, 8.1 Single Language and 8.1 Core Single Language are the same. They should work with the Y9NXP-*****-*****-*****-9D6TC key.

EDIT: In your other screen shot you have in blue

EditionID --------- CoreSingleLanguage
ProduceName --- Windows 8.1 Single language

^^^
They both say Single Language

I will repeat previously asked question about having two different generic install key logically there should be only one if Core and Single Language are same.

You seem to be magically fixed on this word "Core" at the same time not fully understanding what it is supposed to mean.

Although I would rather talk about a basic edition of Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Single Language which also is a basic edition, only difference being its display language cannot be changed, let's use your favorite word "Core" and list all Windows 8.1 editions. Each of them requires its own respective product key, not one of the below listed Windows 8.1 editions can be activated with a product key from another edition:

  • Windows 8.1 "Core" requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core"
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" N requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" N
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" KN requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" KN
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" Single Language requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" Single Language
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing N requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing N
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing KN requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing KN
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing China requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing China
  • Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing Single Language requires a product key for Windows 8.1 "Core" with Bing Single Language
  • Windows 8.1 Pro requires a product key for Windows 8.1 Pro
  • Windows 8.1 Pro N requires a product key for Windows 8.1 Pro N
  • Windows 8.1 Pro KN requires a product key for Windows 8.1 Pro KN
  • Windows 8.1 Enterprise requires a product key (volume licencing key) for Windows 8.1 Enterprise
I repeat: not a single one of above mentioned Windows 8.1 editions can be activated with a product key belonging to another edition. And, as you can see, each and every edition of Windows 8.1 except Pro and Enterprise editions are "Core" editions.

  • Single Language Editions: display language cannot be changed
  • N & KN Editions: No Windows Media Player which must be separately downloaded and installed from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2929699
  • With Bing Editions: only available for OEM's (pre-installed)
