Windows 8.1 update leaks to the web, direct from Redmond

The much-anticipated update to Windows 8.1, which is scheduled for release to the general public in early April, has leaked to the web early.

And this time the leak comes from an unexpected source: Microsoft itself.

Ok, glad you found out the how-to part so that saves me a writeup!

Here are the things I tested after the install (in the order that I did them):

Observed a new Start and Apps menu
Checked my system settings - all were saved OK
Check RAM allocation – Didn't notice any major difference (on my rig)
IE11 – All previous settings were saved
Program lauch times – Didn't notice any difference (my PC was already fast)
Ran Winsat Formal – No difference in WEI scores
Observed a new Store Icon on my desktop taskbar - Unpined and it went away
Windows Updates – No new ones offered/available
Event Viewer – A few logs generated during the update but they never came back after a few reboots
Event Viewer – No errors or new informationals either (again after a few reboots)
Restart Time – Feels about the same to me
Cold Boot Time – Feels about the same to me
Ran a boot-time scan (using Avast 2014) – No issues/all clean

I have the update installed ( obtained the downloads from the tester source.)

Nothing to get really excited about, so for those in doubt, I would suggest you just hang around for the official update.

I am waiting for an official iso of windows 8.1, including the update, which I understand MSDN will be offering. I really would like to try an clean install.

It is important to get the install order correct. This should be:

KB2919442 early preparation File.
KB2939087 2nd early preparation File
KB2919355 The full actual update.
The following are, you could say, updates to the update. They are named "Feature updates", There may be a couple or so more of these before the final release.

Just finished updating with the 9600.17025.WINBLUE_GDR.140214-1706 leak. I haven't noticed anything different from the previous leak. Only just started looking around though. SkyDrive is now OneDrive but the last leaked update 1 did that too.

But I started my update more than a hour ago and it's still running !
Did your update took so much to complete?



After all it messed my OS and I had to refresh Windows, but it's working now !
I think the problem was with the pre-update packages.

Just finished updating with the 9600.17025.WINBLUE_GDR.140214-1706 leak. I haven't noticed anything different from the previous leak. Only just started looking around though. SkyDrive is now OneDrive but the last leaked update 1 did that too.

The differences are not too astounding! You now have the Power options and search as an icon, top right, on the modern gui. The properties of the taskbar give you the option to pin Store apps to the taskbar, or not. You can also list desktop Apps first, and show the apps automatically when you go to start. - Mind blowing is it not!! I understand, and the mysterious phrase is in use again, that there are "under the hood" improvements.

I did read that IE has been updated to a newer version. Maybe someone can confirm this? Mine now says:

Yes, the latest Internet Explorer version on Windows 8.1 is:

The glitch I had with the previous leak is gone as far as I can tell so its not all bad. I was getting a busy cursor a lot when there wasn't anything actually happening to generate it. This install is only a day old though, I just did a clean installed yesterday. I'm actually hoping they create one final version with all these other updates rolled in it. A new 8.1 ISO would be icing on the cake too.

Downloaded this around noon (MST) yesterday, so for around 24 hours I have been running 8.1.1 without any problems. My IE 11 is showing that it is update Version 11.09000.17031 (KB2919355). As to the update it self there has yet to be any problems. Will test some more later, albeit for now it is time to go for a walk around the golf course and chase a little white ball.

Did the upgrade this afternoon with each of the 6 updates in the correct order with the reboots as requested. No problems at all.

I did a system restore and had another go from a different source for the download. IE now shows Version 11.0.9600.17031, Update version 11.0.7 (KB2919355). I think I'm now on the same page as everybody else. :thumb:
