Windows 8.1 consumers: It's time to move to Update 1

Today, June 10, is Microsoft Patch Tuesday. It's also the deadline for consumers running Windows 8.1 to install the Windows 8.1 Update if they want to continue to receive patches and fixes from Microsoft.

Microsoft originally imposed a deadline of May 13 on consumer users to move to the Windows 8.1 Update. On May 12, Microsoft announced a deadline extension to June 10.

Hi there

2020 for W7 expiration -- I'll be LONG retired by then -

I doubt though if I'd still be using W7 by then --- probably though I'll STILL be using XP !!! -- I recut / make Vinyl's for order ill -- a great hobby even in retirement from Engineering / computers and quite profitable -- and my cutting software only works on XP !!! -- I neither need nor want to buy the new expensive stuff -- not worth it for me in the volume I make.

Cheers

You plan to keep doing vinyl cutting even when you retire ? Hobby or business ?
In any case, looks like XP retired before you.

Hi there
Just a (profitable) hobby -- often cut tracks from people's iTunes stuff !! (now that's going full circle -- digital back to analog) and make custom record sleeves and labels . Demand for Vinyl though seems to be increasing a lot these days.

I could get new gear - but as I said the stuff I have works perfectly -- the difficulty I had in the past was getting enough blanks but they are easy to get now. It's quite amusing also listening to some modern music cut on a 10 inch 78 RPM vinyl and played on a wind up gramophone !!!.

Cheers

If you are set to autoupdate it should be, just in case check what updates you have installed and maybe try to force looking for updates.
I have checked many upon many times, I never got it...I will just manually install it.

Ah, THAT Vinyl.... I have a collection of several hundreds of old LPs + tens of 78s, few years ago I spent whole winter digitizing, cleaning , naming and collecting them on DVDs.
Still have a proffy Lenco turntable I used in late '60s, early '70s when I worked as DJ back than. 1974, when I left for Canada, I had 2500 LP, and I don't know how many singles, some of them very (now) rare studio, pre release with white, hand written labels but my brother sold them off in the times of crisis beginning 1990s. Also have an AKAI reel to reel 4 channel tape recorder I used for compiling a weekly two hour radio show.

I think the Store App gets pinned by default, that's a dead giveaway. Anyway thanks for confirming that. :thumb:

It was for me. Also from Managing the Store app pin to the Taskbar added in the Windows 8.1 Update - Ask the Directory Services Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs
As mentioned earlier, the Store Icon is pinned to the Taskbar at first logon after Windows 8.1 Update is applied.

???? Say What?
OK,ok, I'll say it: "what", but seriously folks no store apps pinned on taskbar, not even a hint of them on it. Duck shoot game and Weather.

All I was saying is that the Metro Store App gets pinned to the taskbar by default when you apply update 1. It's a dead give away that you have 8.1 update installed. If you don't have any Apps pinned that's cool. I have two, Slacker radio and the Weather App. Your reply didn't jive with what I was talking about. Maybe the 3 rum and coke I have had has something to do with it. ;)

Pear brandy here but still no apps on taskbar. It seams it doesn't care about which drink it is. Why do you insist on ruining Rum? It's not Bacardi by any chance ? I like it white and neat with ice cube.

Captain Morgan Dark. I have a few Metro Apps installed, I only pin the ones I use a lot. lol, I tried to just screenshot my main monitor but it looks like it snapped all three. The snipping tool won't do Metro Screens. I have to do a Print screen and pull it into paint.

Metro.jpg

If you look you'll see I unpinned the Store App from my taskbar. Sorry if I dragged this thread off topic.

If you are set to autoupdate it should be, just in case check what updates you have installed and maybe try to force looking for updates.
I have checked many upon many times, I never got it...I will just manually install it.

Did you recently upgrade to 8.1 though the Windows Store? I do believe the Store Upgrade now includes update 1.

I have already manually downloaded it, in the right order and everything :)

OK, this is nuts...... I have KB2919355 installed (install date 6/11/2014). Yet when I go through the Control Panel/Program Features/Installed Updates, it says install date of 3/16/2014. Oh well, guess I shouldn't complain, had no problems with updating.

BTW, Store wasn't pinned to my Taskbar. It was pinned to my Start Menu.

Hi there

If you want to pin Metro apps to the DESKTOP (i.e the store etc) rather than the taskbar and / or add them to a cascading menu by using a custom toolbar it can be done quite easily.

This means you can start metro apps directly from the desktop without either having to go into the "Metro screen" or fill your taskbar up with a lot of apps.

I think also with re-sizeable windowing for metro foreseen in W8.1 update 2 (later) or windows 9 this will be a lot more useful being able to mix metro and non metro apps and run without changing the environment.

For the Windows store it's a bit easier --- I'll need a better icon though

screenshot shown below. Simply copy the link into tour toolbar file if you also want this on a custom toolbar.

added custom toolbar with metro apps as well.

Cheers
