Hello Peter,

Yes, it's safe to delete any item in Disk Cleanup whenever and however often you like.

The "Cleanup system files" option is basically to restart Disk Cleanup to have it "Run as administrator" to include junk from the system included as well.

Truly, it is a pleasure to post in this forum as everyone is so friendly and courteous. I have stricken out some forums which had information but were so impatient, condescending and acerbic.
We all had to learn at some time and it is refreshing, here, to receive posts that understand that.

Just a thought -

Maybe try deleting each category one by one leaving the biggest to last ?

I had to do a update clean up on my friends Vista laptop. But it was not getting deleted . I CHECKED everything and clicked Ok - tried it few times with no joy.

But this suggestion helped me alot & could delete them. So basically, I checked Windows Update Cleanup alone and clicked OK - and it worked

Thanks for this discussion. Since CCleaner new version has included monitoring - initially I couldn't get rid of that or automatic startup - I uninstalled it. This discussion is just what I am looking for - a method of cleaning up that is safe, now that I don't have CCleaner. Thanks.

I used ccleaner and many other options but still i have 480mb [ windows update ] when run disc cleanup.
Whats going on?

Sorry guys... but I cringe every time I hear that someone has used CCleaner and now something doesn't work. My suggestion would be to try Wise Disk Cleaner Free Freeware download and reviews from SnapFiles as an alternative going forward and I'm sure it will resolve your current problem as well.

Is Wise Disk Cleaner really wise to use? I see so many posts not to use ANY cleaners that I've grown skeptical about all of them.

Just my two cents - if the sole purpose is to regain disk space then I'd suggest using TFC by OldTimer. It's:

1. Only 438 KB
2. No installation required
3. Anything that has .tmp extension regardless wherever it is including Recycle Bin will be deleted
4. Will do it's job on the fly

Caution: If by any chance you are running any program from Temp location then it will not work

Thanks to the advice from wonderful & helpful people in this forum, I don't use any third party cleaners especially registry ones
It'll make a mess later on.

I've been using it for almost 4 years - it never made any mistake i.e. only and only deleted .tmp files on XP Pro SP3 32-bit, 7 Pro SP1 64-bit and now the current one - I believe this depends on how is the setup

I've been using registry cleaners since the registry was invented. It becomes a huge junkyard otherwise .
