Unable to open UAC control dialog

Hi Anteras,
what value do you have here,

HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system

key enableLUA

value data 0.

Roy

That enableLUA DWORD value should be set to 1 instead so that UAC is enabled. If UAC is disabled, the modern UI will not work.

Hi Brink,
i know that, just happens to be my setting.
note have not had any UI problems, have been using it for months.
MSDN blog also stated that there would be problems with WindowsStore, not for me.

Just wondered what OP's setting was.

Hmmm, I just tried it and got the same error you did.

One last thing to try:

Open a Elevated Command Prompt.
Type cd C:\Windows\system32 and press Enter.
Type UserAccountControlSettings and press Enter.

See if UAC opens now.
The command is accepted and executed without errors, but UAC dialog does not open.

Hi Roy, I just checked and the value is set to 1. Should I change it to 0 and try? Not sure but I think I read somewhere that changing this value to 0 can corrupt the metro interface?

That enableLUA DWORD value should be set to 1 instead so that UAC is enabled. If UAC is disabled, the modern UI will not work.
As I mentioned, I have this enableLUA DWORD value to 1 and the modern UI is working fine.

I'm confused. You mention in the first sentence that the enableLUA DWORD set to 1, then that it's set to 0 in the second sentence.

Double check to make sure that it's set it to 1, and restart the PC if you needed to change it to see how it works afterwards.

Hi Brink, sorry my mistake, I just edited and corrected my previous post, yes it's set to 1. And now here is my confusion: will changing this DWORD value eventually fix this issue or is it only to enable/disable UAC? Right now UAC seems to be disabled in my system.

Hi Antares,
I just wanted to check the value you had in that setting.
As Brink stated 0 is not a prescribed MS setting and can only be changed via regedit.
1 is the setting for the lowest level of UAC..

The reason i asked was that if this value was greater than 4, then UAC will not work correctly.

according to your specs your running nis2014,
Is there a setting within this that overrides MS UAC and incorporates its own.

Roy

So what will setting the DWORD value to 0 change as compared to keeping it set to 1?

No there isn't

Antares,

0 = Disable UAC, and breaks modern UI and apps

1 = Enable UAC. Default setting, and what should be set in Windows 8/8.1.

this fix was posted for W7.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

>USE IT WITH CARE<

I want to emphasize again that I'm not looking to enable/disable UAC, I can do that using the reg files provided in the tutorial in this forum (Brink's post). I can also do it manually via the registry. What I'm trying to fix is the issue by which when I click on "Change UAC control settings", the UAC slider dialog menu does not appear.

The command is accepted and executed without errors, but UAC dialog does not open.

Rats, I was hoping it would open that way.

Check Event Viewer, see if there is anything being logged there that would give us a clue.

Thanks Ztrucker, yes, seems that my faulty RAM stick caused corruption. Right now my system, aside from these errors, is stable and running fine, but whenever I find some time I will fresh install Windows again, it's a better solution than a Windows refresh.
