Tips for new user

As regards the screenshot issue is there a specific format that is "much better" (i.e. much compressed) than the other?

There's a snipping tool within Windows (it was there in Windows 7) that you can use for screenshots.

From the metro interface, start typing "snipping" and by the time you've typed "sni" it will be highlighted. Press enter and click on "New" in the small snipping tool window that has popped up. I think you've "got it" from there.

BTW, the snipping tool produces .png graphics.

I found people here much friendlier than Apple Discussion forums where most of them are "hostile" and "resistant" especially if they find out you are a Google Android phone/tablet/CB user. I think it help to be polite & helpful. And it certainly doesn't cost a penny either isn't it?

Now asking about using a Log-in at startup....i can choose to disable that. That would just hasten the startup. But , (again sorry for repeating myself) i will have to log-in every MS services if that's the case? And what is this "local account"?

I'm slowly seeing now what routines i need to be doing and what i need to set up automatically. One thing i noticed with my wife's laptop's battery life. Is sometimes switches between Balanced and Power/Performance. Is that normal? Can i set it to just Balance to save on battery? Does it affect somewhat the performance if i set it to Balance?

I’m glad you feel that way. There a lot of members here that use multiple brands of devices and OSs. I don’t think anyone here looks down on that.

There’s a section at the beginning of this tutorial that explains the different types of accounts: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5536-user-account-add-new-user-windows-8-a.html

One can sign in with an MS account and create another local account if one desires not to use the services at that time, or one can just use a local account.

I’m not qualified to answer this since I’ve never owned a lappy nor am I very familiar with them. I have worked on a few. You can wait for someone to answer on this, however I think it best if you start a thread specific to the question and/or topic. One can start as many threads as one desires as long as they’re legitimate and not duplicating.

If you decide to, I think it best to post it here: Performance & Maintenance - Windows 8 Forums

A question for you; When will you get your new ultrabook?

I just had. I bought the new Lenovo Yoga 2 11-inch touchscreen laptop. It just arrived and i have yet to set it up.

As regards my last question is that a normal behaviour as far your concerned?

Oh good, you received it. :)

I wouldn't say that's normal. I would think it would stay on one setting, although OEM or OS software may manage it that way. Like I stated, not that familiar with them.

Good luck in your setup.

Thanks.

All set-up and now have Windows 8.1 But....

I noticed most files under my Downloads can't be renamed because "another program is using it" or something to that effect.
How can i check or make sure that i can rename that file? The files in question are mostly .mp3 files (and albums).

OneDrive is now integrated in 8.1. Are you signing in with MS account? Could be OneDrive is syncing at that time? Do you store them there? Perhaps not knowingly?
