Taskbar Shows on Start Screen After Windows Updates

I restored a disk image that I've restored several times with no problems.
This time though, After installing al Windows updates the task bar shows on the bottom of the start screen. (I place my task bar on the bottom.)
I found that it doesn't do this when In place the Task Bar and the top or right side.
It only occurs when the Task Bar is on the bottom or the left.

Never heard of this one.
Any ideas?

First, The Show Store apps on the taskbar is not checked. It's the first thing I did after the update.
Second, with the taskbar on the start screen, when I click the down arrow to go to all apps, I'm unable to scroll.
The task bar is over the scroll bar.

I changed the title of my thread but in the list it still shows up wrong.
I really don't believe I gave it that title.

Today just isn't my day:mad:

I have my taskbar on the left side. Interesting, I think I see what you mean, I never noticed that because I usually use the mouse wheel to scroll left and right.

I restored an image that I created last Sunday.
The other image I created was a clean install of Windows 8.1 that I created several months ago.

The issue is not present in this restored image.

I checked for updates and there are there are 19 important updates.
I won't install any of them until some finds out which one is the culprit.

I'm not sure about this but it seems to me that after the Tuesday updates that the start screen has moved to the left a small amount. Maybe it has to do with my taskbar being on the left? OR..I could be completely wrong. lol

James,

I don't know which update caused this, but I do know how and why it's doing it now.

If you click on the Start button on the taskbar while on your desktop, then the taskbar will always show on the Start screen unless you set the taskbar to auto-hide.

If you press the Windows :winkey: key to go to the Start screen instead, you will not see the taskbar unless you open it.

Having the same issue!

@ Brink: you are correct but it doesn't auto retract like it did before.

(EDIT: It disappears when I click on second monitor!?)

Not so in my case.
I have Auto-hide Taskbar unchecked.... and it has always been unchecked.
I found that if I move the taskbar to the top or left it's fine.
When I have the taskbar on the left or bottom it shows up in the start screen

I did check Auto-hide Taskbar just to see.
But every time I place the pointer at the bottom of the start screen the taskbar reappears.

That's how it's suppose to work with auto-hide turned on and off.

Since the August 12th 2014 Windows Updates in Windows 8.1, the taskbar will always show on the Start, apps, and PC settings screens if you do not have the taskbar set to auto-hide and you open the Start screen by pressing the Start button on the taskbar while on your desktop. If you multiple screens, then you can click on another screen to hide the taskbar.

If you do not have the taskbar set to auto-hide or you open the Start screen by pressing the Windows :winkey: key, you will not see the taskbar on the Start, apps, and PC settings screens unless you open the taskbar.

Naw, this ain't right!
Taskbar covers Music App controls and the only way I can make it go away is to click on my other monitor.

Even with Auto--hide the taskbar checked, what happens is when I click the down arrow in the start screen to go to all apps, I'm unable to use my mouse to scroll right to see the next page of apps.
When ever I put the pointer at the bottom to scroll the darn Taskbar appears making it impossible to scroll.

If this is the way it's supposed to be someone made a mistake.
Unless I'm missing something.
Also, the taskbar is there when I open an app. When I open the Store the taskbar is there!

Also, why doesn't the Taskbar show in the start screen when I set the taskbar on the right or the top of the desktop.
If this was their intentrions in the update, then the geniuses missed something.
This only happens when I set the taskbar on the bottom or right side of the desktop.

So my next question is:
How does one scroll right in the all apps screen???

I did 31 updates including the optional one that adds new features. I'm not seeing this issue. If I use the Start Button to launch the Start Screen the taskbar hides as soon as I move my cursor off of the Start Button. Its hidden on the All Apps screen as well. I don't have auto hide checked? No taskbar on Metro Apps either, not unless I mouse down to the bottom of the screen. I run 3 monitors on this PC if that matters. If anybody has a setting they would like me to look at let me know.

If I move my Taskbar to the right side on my screen, it auto hides on the Start Screen the same way it does if its at the bottom. I run triple monitors so that makes it tricky to access when I do want it but it will appear if I get my cursor in the right position.

I just roll my scroll wheel on my trackball, on the Start Screen or All Apps screen it automatically scrolls right and left not up and down.

How to Open the Taskbar in Windows 8.1

On my desktop PC, with all the updates applied, checking or unchecking the auto hide the taskbar has no effect on how it operates in Metro Apps and the Start Screen. The only thing it does is auto hide it when I'm on my Desktop screen. I have my taskbar set to show on all three monitors, and auto hide is unchecked. If I open Metro App on a screen the taskbar hides on that screen. It will pop up again if I mouse down to the bottom of that screen. If I launch the Start Screen from the taskbar it will stay visible until I mouse away from the Start Button. Moussing back down brings it up again. Same thing with All Apps, it only shows if I mouse down to the bottom of the screen. If I use the Windows Logo Key to launch the Start Screen it opens with the taskbar hidden. I have to mouse down to get it to pop up. 8.1 Pro update 64 bit with Media Center and Nvidia graphics, if that matters. No third party "start menu" program installed.

EDIT: I just fired up my laptop which has all the same updates applied and its working as I posted above. Just the one monitor though and AMD graphics. I have show Metro Apps on the taskbar checked on both PC's.

The problem is, again, when in the all apps screen and "mouse" to the bottom the taskbar appears and blocks the scroll bar, preventing scrolling.
It really doesn't matter to me whether this is by design or not
It's not good.

If it won't auto hide you'll have to use the mouse scroll wheel until you figure it out. For me I have to mouse to the very bottom of the screen (pretty well off screen) for the taskbar to pop up. If the task bar is popping up when you mouse down to scroll, don't go down so far or maybe so fast. Stop short of the very bottom of the screen. just trying to help by the way. :)

I've restored the original image and installed all updates.

Odd, it doesn't seem to be doing it now.

I double checked and checked for updates and there were none, except an optional one.
