Surface Pro Pricing

Today, I want to share a bit more detail about the growing Surface family of products and Surface with Windows 8 Pro, specifically around pricing. In January, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available in two versions and pricing will start at $899:

· 64GB standalone version at $899
· 128GB stand0alone version at $999

I don't get why this is a shock to everyone. Windows 8 Pro, on a touch device (aka Surface Pro), is your ultrabook/netbook competitor, with the added benefits of having "tablet mode" by default. One device? That is even more portable than an ultrabook? Yes please.

Want a cheap, clunky laptop? Get a Dell for $500.

If you ONLY want a tablet, get the Surface RT. It's a tablet OS only. Surface RT is your iPad/Nook/Nexus/Kindle competitor, not the Surface Pro.

You know it's only a matter of time before Apple comes out with a touchscreen Macbook Air with a flip keyboard, and it's going to cost $1,399.

I think you're absolutely correct. I've been reading articles on the subject. We have to compare peaches with peaches (I can't say apples). Although coming in a little higher than I thought, they placed it in the correct range for what it is.

Lol! The MacBook Air with your added features will probably be more like $1899.00. I swear the more they charge for iProducts the more they like it. :D

BTW, welcome to Eight Forums, evertith. Good to have you.

The price is more than I hoped but I'll still probably grab a 64GB version. I'll use it often for work and play and have been waiting an age for a tablet to come out that I'd actually buy (I'll never buy an i-anything) I might hold off and see what 3rd party devices are released.

Also, someone here mentioned that Office is included in the price but I highly doubt it. Can anyone actually confirm or deny this?

Says right on the Microsoft Surface page that Word 2013 and Office 2013 are sold seperately. Big mistake imo. Having office included would have done alot more to justify the price

I hope I can just buy Word, as I don't have any use for all the other programs.

Well, there's a rumor of new Surface tablets that will be out next year. The RT will be continued, but with a smaller screen. There Surface Pro will have an 11 inch screen and might use an AMD APU. Then, there is a rumored Surface Book that will be 14 inches of screen and will use an Intel chip.

UGH. This is why I HATE yearly product updates. There will be ALWAYS something better and less expensive in a year. Smartphones are one, but tablet PCs are another. I don't know, I'll have to think about my needs and if I need it this year or next...

It's almost like they didn't understand what they were marking for with the current products. Changes announced almost immediately upon release.

Best part about waiting for the next thing is that you save money and have 0 buyers remorse. However, Coke Robot with as much as you carry on about how wonderful everything is, I am terribly disappointed that you don't have an RT already and a Pro on pre-order.

I can buy a very good quality laptop with windows 8 and touch screen for less than what the pro is going to cost. I think 899 is way to much to spend. You can get another tablet for less. I think Microsoft is going to price themselves right out of the tablet with the price they want for this especially if you want more memory, that is extra, and if you want the cover that is extra too.

I was thinking of getting a surface pro, but now at that price, I might settle for less.

If you want to compare the iPad and Macbook Air being cheaper than the Surface Pro then you need to compare both of them together in terms of price. The Surface Pro is an ultrabook and a tablet for about $1200 for the top model with keyboard, if you want to do the same with Mac products you have to buy a Macbook Air and an iPad which will bring you to about $1700. Or how about comparing the Surface Pro to a Dell ultrabook like the XPS 13, sure it has an i7 processor but that's it's only advantage over the Surface Pro. Without even touch the XPS 13 sells for $1650. Also, MS isn't going to undercut the price of the Surface Pro and piddle off other OEMs, that's all we need is more whining and crying from Acer all over the media.
