I have always felt uneasy using Defender due to its test scores but I try to use Windows compatible programs. On occasion I wander that is why I have supplemented SWB + MBAM. If I were not behind a router I might use another program.

Anyone out there with 8.1 using another program and feel satisfied with it?

I think you can protect the machine without having to pay, or not?

I feel just fine using Avast free edition backed up with Mbam, free too.
When I compared free and payed versions of Avast, I found nothing that I need there and adding that would just make unnecessary load to the system. MBAM, yes I would use full version but unfortunately it is not compatible to run alongside another resident AV and is not enough to run all by itself.

It does not have to be installed so I thought the extra layer might be good???

I like Avast very much too ! I'm used to Avast + ZoneAlarm Free Firewall

Zonealarm I have not used for a long long time but its possibly the best on the planet. The problem is I prefer to use a multi level security system like AVG, KIS etc. As for Emisoft, never heard of it.

Am now shopping for a new pc as I am fed up with this one's attitude problem.

Sorry to hear about your machine. I read your specs and ram is relatively low. How old is the pc.

Build your own, those brand name, ready built always have something "special" that makes it non-standard and tied too tightly to manufacturer.

Build your own, those brand name, ready built always have something "special" that makes it non-standard and tied too tightly to manufacturer.

This one will be designed by me built by others, I have already selected the first draft, incl 8GB RAM; 1TB SSHD disk and I have a 2TB as second drive ready to go in.

550w power supply but builders recommend 320W, with 20% surplus, so may change

Cooling 4 x fans (added another two in roof) and super quiet triple copper heatpipe. I might not need extra two, thinking about it

Hope one of those "bits n pieces" is an SSD, 120GB at least.
