try this

dism /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

then try booting into safemode or using the commands above again

Here's the result of this:

(I swear this pic is the right way round when I post it!)

Well I have to let my lad get to bed now, so I'll have to resume this tomorrow. Thanks to ALL who've tried to help me get this resolved.... I hate to be beat, but I can't ask any more of you :). Looks like it could be a clean install.

all the best

A report back.........thanks again for all your help, but in the end I felt too far out my depth with 'stuff' I didn't understand! So I decided to opt for a clean install of Windows on the SSD. First I cannibalised an old Dell pc and put the hard drive from that into this PC, installed Windows 8 onto it and got the computer back up and running. Then I copied as many files as I could off of the SSD to my secondary drive where all our documents are, and then reinstalled Windows 8 back on the SSD. It is working again, but whether all my son's games work yet I don't know! Just a heap of updates to do first and then we'll try them out. If there was anything important on the previous SSD then hopefully I'll still have it on the backup. It wasn't the ideal solution, but I've learned loads along the way.

thanks again :)

Hi Jane.
Windows PE is a very different o/s to W8, most participants in this forum will not have had any experience in dealing with it, including myself, as stated in my post 10 "Windows PE is a very limited O/S which has limitations in recovering existing installations or data.". Not my wording but those from a Windows PE webpage.

As for you stating you felt a little out of your depth, in my opinion you are one very clever young lady.
Good luck in the future. Regards dencal.
