Solved Random BSODs on new system, need help please.

Decided to follow up the lead on the wireless card. My wireless card is a network/ Bluetooth 2 in one deal. A website said to go to device manager and click display hidden devices and check for the ! to show that something isn't right, and "Virtual Bluetooth Support(include audio)Code 31" has the !. All my Dumps point to that card, and when I blue screen my audio glitches out too. Was wondering if this could help you pin down the problem, possibly give me an idea on how to fix this.

There's a couple of ways to test it.
First, make sure that you've replaced the current drivers (this is essential). To do this:
- download a fresh copy of the latest, Win8 compatible drivers for the wireless/bluetooth device
- uninstall the current drivers from your system (and make sure that the athrx.sys driver is no longer on your system. If it is, post back for instructions on how to safely remove it)
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

Then, if you continue to get BSOD's:
Try disabling ALL the Bluetooth/wireless stuff (in the BIOS - NOT in Device Manager)
If not possible, then try removing the wireless/bluetooth card from the system (the system may throw errors without the card, but I wouldn't expect BSOD's to occur). To be sure, I'd also uninstall all the wireless/bluetooth software/devices/drivers.
As a last restore, you can disable it in Device Manager - but in many cases the drivers will still load.

The problem here is that you'll be without wireless while you're testing (and that can take several days). You can use a wired connection - either a very long wire, or by moving the system closer to the router.

Another option is to purchase a wireless/bluetooth card from a shop that accepts returns. That way you can get your money back if the card isn't needed.
*******************************************
Verifier blames the wireless drivers (and it still looks like hardware to me). FYI - I have seen problems with wireless drivers of this sort in Win8. So, it's still possible that this is due to drivers and NOT hardware. The driver replacement described above is the way to test this.

Good luck!

Quick question, You said you still think its hardware? So, do you think its the wireless card then? Meaning we have pinpointed the problem? I'm still going to run the testing to rule out drivers for it though.

No, we haven't pinned anything down. The Driver Verifier was done to pin down a 3rd party driver - and that's what it did. Now it's our job to figure out if it's the actual cause - or if it's just a false alarm.

You have to rule out the drivers for the wireless card first (by doing the driver replacement)
Then you follow the suggestions for eliminating the wireless card as a cause (by removing or replacing it)
That will tell us if the wireless card is at fault or not.

Meanwhile, this is how I do hardware diagnostics (after ruling out 3rd party drivers):
1) test all hardware possible with these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
2) then test the rest of the hardware by using this procedure: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

To remove athrx.sys driver - you uninstall the wireless program.
If that doesn't work (or isn't present), then you can remove the wireless device in Device Manager. Right click on it and select "Uninstall". If there's a checkbox to remove the driver, please select that also.
Then check in C:\Windows\System32\drivers to see if it's there (DO NOT DELETE IT - it may make your system unbootable!!!)

If that doesn't remove it, then post back here and I'll post instructions on how to safely remove the driver.

Totally removed the device then updated the driver, athrx.sys was also replaced although athrx.sys dates from 2012 still when the driver is from 2013 not sure if this is normal, anyway still get blue screens on select games with network access not all though which is weird.

I only bsod on games that have their own game launching program still, like steam, perfect world game launcher, stuff like that. Origin hasn't given me any problems but I only run dead space 3 on it.

I can play World of Warcraft , Diablo 3 and Tera with no problems.

Driver removal instructions(probably not needed since you verified that the driver was changed):
1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc:
Win7 - Go to Start...All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc
Win8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
3) Test the System Repair disc to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4) Download this free program (Autoruns for Windows) and use it to disable any instances of athrx.sys that are starting (or any other Qualcomm Atheros wireless entries) (DO NOT DELETE - only disable by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5) Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of athrx.sys (or any other Qualcomm Atheros wireless entries) are "Uninstalled" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).
6) Check in the Services applet (services.msc) to be sure any instances of athrx.sys or any other Qualcomm Atheros wireless entries are disabled.
7) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename the athrx.sys driver to athrx.BAD (search the hard drive for it if it's not in C:\Windows\System32\drivers).

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the Command Prompt option to rename athrx.BAD to athrx.sys
Code:
ren C:\Windows\System32\drivers\athrx.BAD C:\Windows\System32\drivers\athrx.sys
2) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

Good luck!

Please zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post.
We'll continue to look at the memory dumps until this thing is solved.

Have you run Driver Verifier as I requested?

All this time my wlan drivers havnt been updating properly because they have 32 bit drivers. I updated them with newer 32 bit drivers but I'm wondering how I get rid of them and install 64 bit ones.

UPDATE: Since updating the 32-bit driver I havn't crashed yet, Guess I'll continue monitoring and let you know. Any ideas on why it would be using 32 bit drivers though?

Your Windows version is 64 bit.
32 bit drivers shouldn't even install on your system - much less update

How did you get them to install/update?
Please provide the links where you downloaded the original and the updates.

Can't remember where I got it, but I'll include it. After double checking I did install a 64 bit driver, this is the only one that would work though because I had to manually install it, instead of using the setup like all the other ones. I'm not 100% convinced its fixed yet, but I haven't seen a crash in 2 days. So, I'll continue monitoring.

It wouldn't let me include the whole package but I included the folder that I used to update my driver from, I just went to device manager, chose the wireless card, went to update driver and selected that folder and it updated.

I also updated the Bluetooth for it directly from the Atheros driver site, I didn't use the wlan drivers from there because the ones for my card were for windows 8.1 and didn't work.

Some drivers support the installation from Device Manager this way (but there are fewer and fewer these days that allow this method). It's not a problem and as long as the system is working well - let's leave well enough alone for now.

Should the BSOD's return, zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post. If you have problems zipping it, copy it to your desktop and zip it form there.

Have you tried disabling the wireless (in the BIOS/UEFI)?
If not able to disable it there, have you removed the card and it's software?
What were the results?

This memory dump doesn't show anything different - so it's most likely hardware.

I can't recall if this system is still under warranty - but if it is, you should be dealing with Dell now.
If not, then now is the time to start these troubleshooting steps: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting
If purchasing parts, I'd start with the wifi card - but realize that we're just guessing here.

Good luck!
