Power8 - Start menu replacer for Windows 8

Just ran the previous debug version you had posted and it does show it with the hieroglyph. Icon shows right though and does open it up. I'll run this one though too.

Hmmm, C-media is with the c media control panel I use with my asus xonar drivers, along with the asus control panel, from CarvedInside's xonar uni drivers. So you're saying that's what causing it? Kind of strange since I don't even have the c-media CP set to load on startup. Maybe just because of it accessing the reference within the windows control panel?

P.S.
Another notice:

Whenever I first click on the taskbar button for the initial time, I get a really quick flash of I think is the start menu, just above where the start menu location on the desktop is at normally. Like a flash floating above it for a fraction of a second. Only with the first click on the button though. Know anything about that?

Also:

Not sure what that's about there with all those listings..

clicking on anyone of the numbers loads "My Documents" window after a few seconds...

Explorer did indeed crash. That's what I showed above.

Don't worry about extra files or anything. Just copy over and replace the driver with the download. Reboot.

Most recent I've see is 2009 for the dll and 2008 for the sys.

This download link contains a May 2, 2010 version of the driver.

OpenLibSys.org

Code:
0: kd> lmvm WinRing0x64
start end module name
fffff880`0adb1000 fffff880`0adb8000 WinRing0x64 (deferred)

^^^

The download does also have a 2010 .dll but that doesn't even matter in relation to the Explorer.exe crash that happened. The only thing that matters is the 2010 .sys.

Problem with that is that the gadget no longer gives temps if you replace/overwrite those drivers. So it's either the one missing updated .dll that is the key to that, or something else with the newer drivers that is not registering with the gadget. And if the gadget doesn't relay the temps, then for me, might as well not even use it.

I gotcha. Make sure you rebooted for the new driver to start being active.

If you already did that, you can try placing the .dll from the download over the one there now and then reboot again.

Yeah, deleted the key and rebooted, and also checking driverquery before and after to make sure it's not still loaded in the system. Doesn't work. Plus the downloaded winring0 doesn't have the one extra .dll in it that the gadget one has, so I can't try and overwrite the one in the gadget. Don't have it to overwrite with.

Displays temps with the original .sys/.dlls in the gadget though.

I would leave it as is if it's working. If/when Explorer.exe crashes again, consider uninstalling completely to test if it never does again.

If it remains true that there are no crashes with it gone, I'd consider looking for another solution to replace it.

While "CMedia Control Panel" is a separate app, it has a Control Panel element linked. At startup, Power8 scans ControlPanel items in the system and interacting with them. And this caused problem because it did not return data when it was expected, but just left the values passed in place.

Newest debug build hasn't crashed yet..
Great! Anyway, please remove %temp%\p8log.txt, restart p8 and email log to me again. Just want to be sure all is going well now.

I know only that your PC is incredibly fast (there are timings in log). So you see flash. This is white window shown while WPF creates drawing surface to display P8 window contents.

Never mind, that's only in debug version. Release will show PC items.

Since all seems to be good, tomorrow I'll create release Alpha 3 Hotfix 2 build that will include the fix for you (and also couple of other fixes). Thanks for details and help :)

All seems to be in place.
Only one thing. Does Windows Control Panel displays CMedia CPL same way as Power8 (same icon and Chinese name)?
If not, can u plz attach export of the next registry branches:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ControlPanel

Thanks, but that's too early for "good job". We're working on 0.3.5 - there it will be at least "not so bad job" I think :)

Hello everyone,

we've just released Power8 Alpha III Release 2!

Support for removable and Ram drives, drive labels, MSI installer, Auto-update, and a heap of fixes and enhancements (full list as usual at Changelog project page).

Don't hesitate to contact developers if you have a feature request or suggestion :)

Have a nice day.

Minor cosmetic thing: Installed with msi installer, and it shows as 0.3.2.0 version in programs and features. Is 0.3.5.0 in program files though.

Thanks for the hint!
It will bring no problems, will change in 2 weeks.

I've added note in MSI description on this.

Hello people!

We released Power8 Alpha4 yesterday!

This time it's 3-way search, and better layout on non-Aero systems.
I suggest reading Feature Details page of Power8 wiki to get deeper understanding of Search feature.

P8 should update automatically, but if not - use Download section of Power8 site.

Please post your feedback here or via comments of P8 site/directly to developers, we appreciate all ideas and suggestions :)

Best wishes!

installed the MSI version and it did nothing. Ran the program and nothing. Found no way to access the program. It did make my Hard Drive spin like mad.

Zip version worked fine however.
