Mistakenly set IE to open all .eml docs. How to change?

Am a newbie here - so Hello all....

Need some help please.

Trying to save emails to a disc.
But Windows 8.1 doesn't seem to allow me to simply copy and paste to a disc in the files / format I want.

I did not realise that my mobile / laptop / server were all synced. I used to have a POP account. But Windows 8.1 automatically gives you IMAP - and this syncs every gadget. Unfortunately I did not realise that when I was deleting emails off the server (to create more space) I was simultaneously deleting emails on my laptop. I thus deleted super sensitive and super important emails that I thought I had safely saved on my laptop in neat files in Windows Mail.

I have followed a tutorial on here to find all emails hidden on my laptop.
This I did by going into Folder Options and unselecting the Hidden Files box. So far so great. Suddenly all my emails since I bought the laptop at Xmas appeared in .eml format.

So then I followed the next tutorial about saving them to a shortcut on the desk top. Did that. Then backed up to a disc.

Very stupidly I then created a problem.
Somehow when I clicked on one of the .eml emails I pressed the wrong button.
The system asked me how I wanted to open the .eml file. And somehow I pressed Internet Explorer. So now my whole backlog of emails are ALL saved with the IE motif and I can't read any of them and don't know how to change it back.
I tried re-saving them on a 2nd shortcut - but that didn't work either - the system still wants me to open every saved .eml email with Internet Explorer.
I just can not figure out how to change the way .eml is opened.
Can someone please help?

Also - advise on how I read these .eml emails in the future will be most useful!!
Do I somehow have to re-import them into Windows Mail ?

Really hope to get some feedback soon. Thanks.

Thanks
I did try and navigate my way round my laptop to figure out a solution before you replied.
I did all you said. There was no app associated to my .eml emails. So I did download a free app called eml viewer. Trouble is that if I use this app to open the .eml all I get is a black screen. It doesn't work.
Before I associated IE to the .eml I could see all the emails, Now I can't.
I just want it back the way it was.
Or to be simply able to copy/paste my emails somewhere I can easily read them.
What app do people normally use to store their saved emails in .eml form ???

Or do you think it best to re-set my computer to an earlier time today before it made this changes?

What email client program do you currently use for your email?

For example: Mail app, or Windows Live Mail

If you have recent restore point dated before this happened, then sure you could do a system restore with that restore point to undo the mistake. :)

Was Windows Live Mail listed to select in "Open with"?

NO
That is the problem
Cant find it any where
And cant find an app for association either

Have you tried this---

Brink - how do I reinstall Windows Live Mail?
I am not too sure what to do first on that link you suggested ??
Do I uninstall ? Then reinstall? Would be very worried about losing data if I unistall

Double check to see if what David posted above has Windows Live Mail as an available option. If so, then you shouldn't need to reinstall Windows Live Mail.

Under the Default Programs section there is a "Set program access and computer details" section.
I just clicked on that.
There are 3 options:
- Microsoft windows
- non-Microsoft
- Custom

Mine is set to Custom. Is this correct? or should I set it to Microsoft windows ?

Also - what makes it worse is that I can't seem to get rid of the App I downloaded and which only gives me a black screen now.
This eml viewer App seems to have linked itself to all my emails. eeek

So am guessing that if I try and uninstall eml viewer maybe I will lose all the emails it has attached itself too. Is this correct?

HI
I hope I just did the right thing! I changed the association. I set the default association to open with Notepad instead of eml viewer. Then I deleted this silly eml viewer App. So that seems to have got rid of that problem.

But I still need to find a way to find Windows Live on my default program list. And to always be able to read saved emails.

HI
Thanks
I reinstalled Windows Live Mail.... only to then realise that I am not using it. Am such an idiot...

I use a different company for my mail, I have always used globalnet (via plusnet now) When I got the laptop at Xmas they helped me set it up so I got my mail in an account called globalnet - not through Microsoft Windows Live Mail. Does that make sense??

I used to have Outlook Express on my old computer.
I just searched my laptop and have found I do have emails set up also under Outlook.com, but only old ones.
I am really not sure why I have an Outlook account on the laptop, why it only has old emails in it, and why I cant have all my emails in both Outlook (as a storage facility/doubling up) and this other globalnet account (which I currently only use).

It would be great to sort this issue out first. I really need to resolve this syncing which deletes emails I want to keep on my computer, I am thinking that maybe Outlook will just store and not sync delete ??

Then I am wondering if there is an App for Outlook which will enable me to read all the .eml emails I backed up.

I kind of need to sort these issues out soon - my server is blocked and I am not getting any emails !!
Thanks
