Microsoft's 128GB Surface Pro sells out within hours

Just hours after Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro went on sale Saturday, the 128GB version of the tablet sold out online.

Shoppers for $1000 tablet at the online outlets of Best Buy and Staples, as well as Microsoft's own web store, began seeing "not available" or "out of stock" notices just hours after midnight Eastern Time when the Windows 8 slate went on sale

I cannot see how anyone would pay $1000 for a tablet, ANY TABLET, unless they have nothing better to do with their money, because it is not just $1000, You now need to buy the keyboard, you need a screen saver, by the time you finish you are up to almost $1500
For that I could get 2 pcs and one laptop!

There are a lot of people out there that look at $1000 like most folks look at $100.

Or you can use Windows RT, use the Window Azure service to manage the devices, and BAM! Windows for dummies!

Also, Windows 8 in itself is THE MOST secure version ever, so the notion that Windows today is security issue riddled is nonsense. And then there's Windows Updates, does anyone even notice those even occurring? I don't, I still check in Control Panel to make sure they are because they're that seamless and SO much less problematic than before. Lastly, Windows 8 and RT include built in anti-STD protection which requires very little input, and the system keeps itself managed with the Automatic Maintenance features, so less involvement is needed.

I can see those two being much more advantageous over other counterparts. ipads used for sales people and to manage queues at Verizon, Windows 8 and RT tablets used for work and productivity.

What's the concern about security with a Windows tablet? You apply the same principles, which is hardly any effort at all, to a Windows tablet as you would to a Windows PC. That some find this a reason to go for an iPad is quote bizarre, bordering on stupidity actually.

I don't see it being stupid. You have to update Windows, you have to stay on top of security updates, you have to run AV and malware sofware, you run things in a sandbox...yadda, yadda, yadda. Or you can use something else and not bother with any of this stuff. I can see that as very advantageous for lots of people.

In this case I'm talking about a PC environment where you do real work, not where you just look at facebook or play the latest fart apps. All of my PC security works automatically, I don't need to intervene at all. IE10 is configured such that I don't get any crap and that's it. Where is the effort that people always seem to be going on about?

Agree.
Windows Update process in W8 is really un-noticeable until you notice that "Your PC will be restarted in 3 days to finish installing updates" on sign in screen.

We have yet to see heavy deployments, so I am going to remain a bit skeptical that all things security wise are just going to automagically work perfect. I've yet to see it yet in any version of Windows.

The people for whom I've set up their PCs don't really know what they are doing, so once I've set things up, they don't go about changing things, as they don't know where to look or have the inclination to do so. If anyone were to deliberately go about changing what I've done, then they would get one warning and after that I'd recommend a place where they get charged for any repairs.

Hi there
I wouldn't pay 1000 USD for a tablet - but I remember when portable TV's came out (original models had a 2-3 inch screen and were also Radio sets) people paid a huge amount of money for these.

People will pay money for what they perceive as trend setters.

People will also pay ridiculous sums of money for what others see a total waste -- I for one can't understand why people pay 1000's of dollars for say a Rolex watch when the watch I'm using I was given FREE when I bought 50 litres of Gas and it works just as well and probably better (and for my eyes also the "old fashioned Railway clock" face it has is infinitely easier to read) than the Rolex !!.

People's choice (if they have the money). My "freebie" watch is much more useful than the Rolex and who cares if I lose it and for sure I certainly won't get mugged for it or be immediately suspected of being a Drug Dealer / Smuggler when going through Immigration at Los Angeles airport (LAX).

Cheers
jimbo

After reading this... probably better going off with this 'Cintiq 24HD Touch" Sure it's about 5 times the cost but I personally rather have stability than shoddy support. Plus I can just plug it into one of these anyway so it's great!

With the Mac Pro Update and me updating my main PC to a dual 6-core machine and at 64GB of ram the surface pro plus the cintiq 24HD will be a great combo.

Hey, I got mine .:D I was the first one thru the doors at Best Buy. They only had 1, the two guys behind me didn't get one. I wondered why they only had one. It seems to me anyone spending that type money would want 128GB not 64GB considering you have to subtract the space taken up by OS . But what do I know about .......

exactly, many ppl go to porn sites and download bad software riddled with malware, otherwise I would not still be in business,,,lol most of my clients are those who are racked with viruses and trojans, It is bad enough on a PC but one would expect a Tablet to have more security than a pc. You can go to a porn site on the ipad and not get a darn thing but go to a porn site on a pc and you are in for a heap of trouble.

If I am going to spend over a $1000 for a tablet I would like it to be security free

I have had one that when Avast popped up and told them that there was an infection and asked them what to do they picked ignore it instead of quarantine it, because this particular game they went to was a favorite of all their friends.
This game put on more spyware onto their computer it took me hours to remove it all

No, you simply explain to them what they have not done and what they have done wrong, to the best of their understanding. I then tell them what I'm doing to fix the issues. As I said, none of them have had problems thereafter. My wife plays on-line games on her laptop (Vista), which I've also setup and so far she hasn't had any issues.

Considering that you have 'clients', then it's all money in the bank when they don't listen to you.

Hey Robinb9,

Apple = Security through obscurity - That does not mean invulnerable.

“There is no economic benefit to investing the time in compromising a Mac when you can compromise 10 to 20 times more systems for the same level of effort by going after PCs.”
- Mac Security: Antivirus | Macworld

by the time you finish you are up to almost $1500
For that I could get 2 pcs and one laptop!

No You can't and I dare you to prove it. Oh, right, garbage PC's and a garbage laptop.

Who would pay $799 or even $929 for a tablet? Oh, yeah, people who might buy an ipad.
Oh and with all those accessories.. wow, I really could build a nice Desktop.

Sheesh, really? Someone needs to stop eating the poison Apples and get some help.

btw, I haven't been infected in Win7 in a couple of years, since the wife opened an email she didn't really pay attention to.
And on Win8? Haven't been infected yet.
