Microsoft's 128GB Surface Pro sells out within hours

Just hours after Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro went on sale Saturday, the 128GB version of the tablet sold out online.

Shoppers for $1000 tablet at the online outlets of Best Buy and Staples, as well as Microsoft's own web store, began seeing "not available" or "out of stock" notices just hours after midnight Eastern Time when the Windows 8 slate went on sale

I think we all know that.

Not hard to do if MS stores had about 150 units each and Best Buy got 1 or 2 each at most.

Strange. I wonder why.

Come on, I think that the Surface Pro is quite sleek. And nice. And pretty.
Though I am pretty sure that flimsy piece at the back will fall off in a couple of months.

Do they really need to do this?

I didn't see this as a MS fluff piece. It's more about how could MS screw up and not be ready for demand. A Guy

Old trick - keep supplies down and prices up. Mercedes worked that way for decades. There were times when they had a delivery schedules of 3 years - and people bought them.

Hi we could even create a Market on this on Betfair for that one -- we could all take a pretty safe bet. _ I think even in the US the law is being relaxed against online betting (actually it's a "Betting Exchange" which is slightly different) but the principle is the same.

Have a look at the screenshot !!! The section would be "Special Bets".:dinesh:

Cheers

I cannot see how anyone would pay $1000 for a tablet, ANY TABLET, unless they have nothing better to do with their money, because it is not just $1000, You now need to buy the keyboard, you need a screen saver, by the time you finish you are up to almost $1500
For that I could get 2 pcs and one laptop!

here is a thought, with an ipad you do not have to worry about security, you do not need an antivirus program or antispyware program, but what is going to happen with the Surface Pro? it is run by windows 8 which still on my desktop and laptop get MS security updates because of the "holes" still in Windows. Will you get Security Updates for the Surface Pro also? will you have to start putting an antivirus program and spyware program on the Surface Pro?
If Yes, then it will be a royal pain in the you know what, that is why I got the Ipad in the first place so I did not have to deal with all that security.
Anyone know? or is it still too early since the Surface Pro just came out

Yes to everything. This is simply a Windows 8 machine in a very small form factor. Anything that pertains to Windows 8 on a desktop/laptop will still apply equally here as well.

Nope, won't be buying one this year for a few reasons:

1) Being a Microsoft fanboy means I use Excel to manage my finances, as far as I know, a Surface Pro isn't in the books for this year when I have several other priorities, one being a pricy desktop rebuild for the Windows 8; which a Surface Pro is about half the cost of it.

2) I don't have a need this year for a secondary PC. When I go back to school, I will, but for right now again, I want to rebuild my desktop for Windows 8 and get a 27 inch IPS touch monitor when one finally comes out, as well as having SO much computational power that I literally won't know what to do with it. Maybe play Grand Theft Automobile 5?... :D

3) It's rumored that the Surface Pro 2 later this year will feature an AMD APU processor over an i5. This means it will pack a REAL potent graphical punch, which is what is needed for Photoshop, AutoCAD, metro app rendering, and pretty much every other bit of digital media software. I'm an AMD fan, so I'll take that over Intel. Also, it should come in an 11.6 inch touch screen as well...so...yeah.

But to speculate on the low shipments of the Pro, I have to say it's a combination of low supplies and more than expected demand with a bit of artificial scarcity involved. The RT when launched, sold out in a couple of days I think it was. The Pro did the same, with the 128 gig model sold out the first day. And seeing since the Pro came after the RT, I have to wonder if there were part supply issues with it, as the Surface tablets have like....200 custom designed parts? It's a VERY new product, with a healthy amount of demand, but not enough stock.

The same thing is happening with the Nokia Lumia 920, for some people it took weeks before they got theirs after launch. The red one was recently replenished, the yellow one as well as that seems to be a HUGE seller; at least in China with the 920T. The latest Lumia Windows Phones have been met with a healthy amount of demand, but stock isn't enough to supply that demand.

In hindsight though, it's better to have a low supply issue and high demand versus high supply and low demand...

What's the concern about security with a Windows tablet? You apply the same principles, which is hardly any effort at all, to a Windows tablet as you would to a Windows PC. That some find this a reason to go for an iPad is quote bizarre, bordering on stupidity actually.

I don't see it being stupid. You have to update Windows, you have to stay on top of security updates, you have to run AV and malware sofware, you run things in a sandbox...yadda, yadda, yadda. Or you can use something else and not bother with any of this stuff. I can see that as very advantageous for lots of people.
