Vista and Office 13 no go.

Tried to install Office 13 on Vista HP, and it would not install. Bit of a bummer, which means you will need to upgrade to use it.

It took three tries but I finally got it downloaded (quick launch version downloaded via a link in an e-mail I got after I signed up). In two attempts previously I got to a point where I got a message that I was not authorized to access the page.

Now I am trying to find a way to launch it so it does NOT show up as a Metro app. (Maybe my mistake was launching it from the Metro start page?) Maybe I need to go in and launch it the hard way from the desktop? (I normally go straight to the Desktop in Windows 8.)

First impression: ho hum. The interface is definitely different but other than the option to login to an online account and store my documents on my SkyDrive, I don't see a big difference in functionality. I was able to store a Word document as a PDF (did not try the opposite) but I wasn't able to edit the PDF after I saved it. (I think I had the ability to add comments and such as I do in Acrobat Reader X, but nothing more.) It is rather bland and white in appearance in most places but I'm not too bothered by that. It's just that - so far, anyway - I don't see much difference in functionality over Office 2010.

I have not yet tried the other Office applications (other than a little PowerPoint slide show that was presented as part of the download/install).

When push comes to shove, you could say the same thing about 2010 v. 2007 and 2007 v. 2003. They are all incremental changes. I have 2010 loaded up on the desktop and out of laziness I still have 2003 (minus Outlook) on the laptop. I use them pretty interchangeably.

Here is what I really would want to see in Word:

a creative mode,
an outlining mode, and
a brainstorming mode.

Back in 1994, I used Ami Pro which had a wonderful outlining mode. I loaded up that sucker last year, and it still rocks. It had one of the first icon toolbars, and it beats the ribbon for the things I do.

Back in 1993, I used Wordperfect for DOS. I would love a mode like that in Word: just me and the text on the paper. No fonts, no toolbars, no resizable windows, no mouse.

Back in 2003 I used Wordperfect for Windows, and it was great for taking notes. I never want to take notes in Word.

I think intelligent design trumps flash every time.

I haven't managed to install 2013 preview yet (in Win 8). I got an error message saying that 32bit and 64bit can't co-exist.

The links all point to "Office 365 Home Premium" - the "cloud" application and something of which I really want no part. Where's the version I install on my local machine, that keeps my documents on my machine, and has nothing to do with the oh-so-overhyped "cloud"?

I do NOT want to store my docs in the cloud, get to them from the cloud, or run applications rom the cloud. Call me old-fashioned that way.

It might be called "Office 365", it is still Office 2013/15 and can completely work without any Internet access. It is installed on your computer, can save on your computer and can have nothing to do with the cloud.

Office 2013 Preview installed and running! :)

Besides the capital letters in my email address on the form as mentioned in an earlier post, it was a very easy and efficient experience via TechNet. Would highly recommend to anyone to get an account.

Thumbs up so far. Love the Metro lQQk. I'll be getting familiar with and working on settings. So, 2-a-roo for now.............

Honestly I think office 2013 is really crap, but then I think that of Windows 8 which you quite like; so it may be work persevering with the office messing as you might really like it.

Hi there
Thanks for info -- found a better solution -- download from TechNet.

Downloading now from TechNet -- it's downloading now without me having to give details like "When did I last take the dog for a walk" or when did "I last visit the Bog" etc.

Enc screenshot of TechNet download screen -- no stupid questions asked.

Cheers

LOL

Good one jimbo. :D I also keep my 2010 version installed.

I didn't got time to go to the process either.
I got the 64bit official installer but if I remember correctly I found a key somewhere on google but didn't got the time to install it yet (not sure the key works).
I intend to test the new office in VMware and of course I'll stick with my reliable office 2010 version.

I also dld the technet file, and did not have to enter a product key, and just installed Word and Excel, nothing else, on my W2G Flash. I asked if it would install on first run, whichafter installing then said it needed to restart. Why? When I ignored this, and opened Excel it worked fine.

Tried to open Word and it then tried to reinstall Office, finally ending with a BSOD. :(

On rebooting Word wanted to open in safe mode which I ignored, and it opened OK, loaded a PDF file I'd created earlier (using Word (ahem)'97 and CutePDF) for editing and it totally screwed up the formatting. It did ask If I wanted to download the proofing tools and on accepting, took me to the Office 365 dl page and I ran the proofing tools installer. Cheerily it said just restart Word and you are ready to go. There's no restart on the ribbon or menus or anywhere - so I had to exit and then slog over to the far right of the metro tiles to find the Word tile. I checked Word '97 and the 2013 installation has bu88ered that up, so it needs reinstalling, but Excel '97 is fine.

Reopening the PDF in word, it said that there were no proofing tools installed would I like to dl them...

Went to Control panel and thought I would install some program features from the Office 2013 setup program, but it only offered to uninstall Excel and Word

The add/remove features is available from the setup program, but it does not seem to calculate disk space properly, with much larger requirements the second time around.

All in all the setup has some bugs to resolve.

I have the MSO 2013 product key from technet - why is it not accepted when it is put into the add features cplet? it would seem the ideal method of download - just pick up a product key and add the feature on demand.

Why do I still use Office 97? It takes (less than 5) minutes for a full install of Office97. It requires no activation, and the product key is not 25 characters long. It produces documents .doc and .xls indistinguishable from those made in later versions if printed or transferred as files. The toolbars take up much less screen space than the ribbon, and are customized to my needs, ideal for my netbook on the road. I know where all I need is in the menus. The output files are tiny. It starts up and loads documents superfast, and does not screw about with panels, just fast popups that dismiss just as fast. I print to PDF if needed using ghostscript and CutePDF.
I don't even have to install office on the machine I am using, I can run Winword97 or Excel97 from another office installation over the network. It does not spend hours configuring itself. With the Office 2003 file converter it can do all I need.

LOL! Funny as hell! Glad you got it downloaded, Jimbo. I guess since I have a TechNet account and signed in on my rig with a Live account, the form was all filled for me. Both are tied to same email account.

Sorry to hear about your BOSD, fafhrd. I thought it strange it wanted a reboot after install, but I did. Didn't want to take chances. It would do that to add data to the registry, wouldn't it?

gratuitous reboots - I previously installed the full 2013 Office on a VHD windows 8 and it asked not to reboot at all. and all works fine - it was the different way I installed it,since I am tight on space - i asked it to only install on first run instead of all from my computer. It's not loading any new hardware - just software why should it need to reboot or reload the registry?
