Microsoft envisions a future where apps are 'Bingified'

It's not just science fiction. Microsoft is working to make calendar, e-mail and other 'super' apps smarter by embedding entity information directly into them.

Microsoft execs made it official earlier this year: Bing is more than a Web search engine. It's also a dev platform.

Fulling grasping what this means and understanding how Bing will influence the future of products at Microsoft isn't all that intuitive. I think this is one reason why some outsiders think it would be prudent and easy for Microsoft to simply sell off its search business as a way to boost the Microsoft stock price.

Last week, I had an "aha!" moment about how the Redmondians are thinking about the future influence of Bing thanks to Distinguished Technical Engineer James Whittaker, who spoke at the Business Insider Ignition conference in New York City.

Whittaker -- a Softie who joined Google, returned to Redmond and lived to tell about it -- is one of a handful of developers working on a new evangelism team at the company. Prior to joining the new deep-tech evangelism team, Whittaker's most recent gig at Microsoft was development manager for the Microsoft knowledge platform as part of the Bing team

Not on my computer....

Not on mine either...

Anyway it's not gonna work offline just like any other cloud-synch 'magic'.
But if you're online, those nice processes will do their work silently in the background. You won't be bothered at all, except for the (rarely displayed) ads. :D

Hi there.

Unlike a lot of people I come from a time where if a product was advertised on TV people thought what a junk product having to use such a low brow medium as TV to advertise the item. When I was a bit younger we didn't even HAVE TV one day of the week (Thursday's for some strange reason until 1986) -- also no proper Internet / mobiles back in those days either -- we actually had to COMMUNICATE with real people etc. Why is there no t.v. programs scheduled in Iceland on thursdays ?

This isn't as idiotic as it sounds --I've seen many articles in the papers recently about some families trying a "Digital Free Day" once a week to try and reconnect again as Humans - how often when you go out into a restaurant these days do you see several people -- whether a family group or just a bunch of colleagues -- all fiddling around on their mobile phones and not actually speaking to each other !!!

You never see Ferrari's or Mayerbach;s advertised on TV or even Gulf Stream Jets so there must be some truth in the low brow element of TV,

I don't have too many objections to PASSIVE advertising but I avoid like the plague those which force me to complete an action before proceeding. (The London Underground / Tube for example would be a far worse place without the advertising on the escalator walls etc).

Cheers
jimbo

Yup. Here in Miami tourists ride the Metro Mover because it's free. Homeless and poor people ride it for the same reason. The tourists usually insert their heads in their phones to ignore the undesirables, and everyone else, on the train. The funny thing is you often see people walking down the sidewalk talking to themselves. When you get closer you can tell which ones are crazy because they aren't wearing "hands free" phone gear. Sometimes I feel like saying to these phone people "please turn on the speaker phone. If I have to listen to you talk on the phone I might as well hear the whole conversation, not just your half." :)

I have a habit of thinking out loud sometimes, especially if I think I'm alone in the room. That was my classic reply when one of my co workers caught me talking to myself. ;)

I had to laugh because a few nights ago I said to myself "I've got to stop talking to myself." I don't want to be mistaken for a crack head. I never saw anyone on crack until I came to Miami. It's weird how they talk like they're in some other space time discontinuum. One guy asked me how to get to CVS Pharmacy. I didn't figure out he was asking for CVS until 10 minutes after he walked away. He kept sayin' "See Vehhhh" "See Vehhhh."

Don’t like ads in certain apps, especially the Bing apps? > Don’t use the app or buy the Pro version.

That's correct, not using the search charm/Bing app, obviously, will prevent transferring search term and results to Bing/MS. On the other hand, the Windows 8.1 Professional does have the search charm...

Don’t like Bing in your search? Turn it off. (Don't forget other categories there)

You want control? Push the link just under the "Clear" button there: Your privacy and Microsoft personalized ads

Sounds good, but that's not how it actually works. Grab your copy of Wireshark, disable Bing search, use the search charm, and you'll see something like this, if you filter by destination:

search charm.jpg

For me, turning it "Off" would mean that there's no connection to Bing, not just hiding the Bing results on the local machine. Seemingly, Microsoft has a different point of view on this subject, that actually counts for anything for the most part. The MS view may even become standard, LG already do the same with their latest TVs:

Your TV now watching you too! LG Smart TV caught collecting owners' Habits and USB file names | The Hacker News - Security Blog

LG also gives an option to disable this "feature", but just like Windows 8.x Bing app, it continues to "call home" and sends the data. The difference is that LG does not use TLS/SSL to send the data while Bing app does.

The option of disabling these futures is nice to have, but doing so should actually disable it. If it doesn't, the Microsoft/LG privacy policies and statements about personalized ads mean nothing.

I expect they will be telling us that gathering our data is all for our own good.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting and rather disturbing if true.

Quite honestly, I’m not familiar with this program nor am I that advanced to what all that all means. I understand IP address and protocol type. I somewhat understand the upper pane as being traffic, the middle is filtered results I’m assuming, and I have no idea of the lower one. Some questions:

204.79.197.200 is Bing (server) IP address I take it?

Are you logging on with local or MS account?

If MS account, do you have all these off?

View attachment 32463

What about the rest in that section?

If local account, it also sends the data?

What about syncing with services and/or accounts?

Thanks for posting this. Interesting and rather disturbing if true.

I wish it wasn't true...

Quite honestly, I’m not familiar with this program nor am I that advanced to what all that all means. I understand IP address and protocol type. I somewhat understand the upper pane as being traffic, the middle is filtered results I’m assuming, and I have no idea of the lower one.

That's pretty much it, the lower one is the actual data being transferred over the wire, encrypted, and displayed in hexadecimal...

Some questions:

204.79.197.200 is Bing (server) IP address I take it?

Yes, the PTR DNS entry shows: 204.79.197.200 any.edge.bing.com

Are you logging on with local or MS account?

It does not matter, the results are the same....

If MS account, do you have all these off?
What about the rest in that section?

Yes, and anything else that can be turned off...

If local account, it also sends the data?

What about syncing with services and/or accounts?

Skydrive sync for the MS account had been disabled, as soon as I could after installation, after deselecting all default on options. The storage space used by the MS account is 128 KB of the available 7.00 GB for about four month now.

As stated earlier, if you don't use the search charm, there's no connections to Microsoft. Other searches, such as within Windows Explorer and command prompt do not initiate any connections as of yet. In my pessimistic view, it's waiting for the next SP (a.k.a. version 8.2) to integrate these searches into the search charm/Bing App.

Within the desktop, if you right click on the new style "Start" icon, you can select "Search" that opens up the search charm as well. Instead of typing in the search term, like in previous versions of Windows...

Works, most of the times unless Microsoft patches decide otherwise...
@ Cr00zing

Ok, very good. Thanks for posting again. It's not that I don't believe you, I think we need to be careful when pointing fingers. Don't think for a minute that I won't look into this further.

I see there's a few of us watching this thread at this moment. I just got up from a nap and read this. I need to do a few things. You can bet your next check I'll be back......
