VSS should be set to manual. The service will be automatically invoked whenever it's needed.

If you stop Volume Shadow Copy while it's doing work you will most likely corrupt the backup copies.

The upshot is, you may set it to automatic, automatic delayed start, or manual. I doesn't matter as long as you don't stop it while busy.

The best way to put it is to ask, "What is the default setting for Win 8.1 for the VSS, 'stop' and 'manual' or 'start' and 'automatic' or ?

If you have a lot of restore points it could easily double the size of your image

Not really. An image is between 500MB and 1GB. Even if you have, let's say 10 images e.g. 7GBs, that is only a third or a quater of a typical system installation (assuming the user data is not on the C partition).

If the user data is on the C partition, it may only be a small fraction.

The custom recovery image is a fancy restore point too.

You are correct. I was thinking Refresh Images. Restore Points are relatively small in size.

Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) is enabled and set to manual by default. It's not set to running though.

I understand about the 'manual' setting. The enabled throws me off. Does that mean start or stop?

My settings are only start or stop and manual or automatic as my prnt scrn shows.

Are you saying it should be start for enabled- enabled it not a word there as I can see. I hit properties to see the settings.

I assume system restore will work automatically and Macrium will cause this to start as necessary.

I read an article about Macrium that said to start VSS and run it automatically so it threw me off.

Start or stop - I agree with manual but in pro there is a start and a stop also.

With any MS Operating system the general consensus with regards to services is that the system is a better manager of memory use, than the user.

This was not the case with XP and previous, and thus a lot of discussion and manual editing was normal, and indeed often beneficial.

VSS is an important service for system safety so IMO should be running and on automatic.

The only changes from the default running services that may be "needed" on a modern OS are where a particular services' functionality is absolutely not required, Eg. Wireless services on a system that has no wireless hardware, though even in these rare cases the default set-up, will often contain at least one As Required call early in the start chain that would prevent them running in any case.

Btw, I ran an image with your settings and verified it noticing that VSS was running just for that.
So it ended well. I have a few other thank yous to make.
