You're most welcome. Yes, all but "Windows Backup" would also apply to Windows 8.1 as well.

Thank you for this helpful thread, really appreciate your work.
While I was trying to merge these keys I get error like that for some keys
    http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/3717/ag5y.png
What is the problem and how to fix it ?
Also is there anyway I can merge them all at once or automatically merge them all rather than double clicking each one which is going to take loooong time ??

P.S, I messed up with some services props which caused some errors and I cannot remember exactly which were changed.
-I get this error every time I try to open IE
    http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/3598/8uq0.png
-And this one when trying to use "Check for solutions"
    http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/3986/omjm.png
    With some other errors
    P.S2, I'm using win 8.1 pro 64x
    Thank you

    Hello Abdo,

The import error just means that some of the registry entries from the .reg file were not able to be merged. This is normal since not all of the default registry entries for the service may have been affected.

If able, you might see if doing a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to quickly fix it for you.

Thank you so much for the quick reply.
For the system restore option, the restore point taken was just after installing windows which means I'll have to install all the progs and drivers again which is really a pain in the ass.
That's why I want to try restoring services to default first, I was guessing it would be much easier.
Anyway thank you for the tip, I guess I'll have to do a system restore.

If I have more than one restore point dated let's say 14/9, 10/9, 8/9 & 6/9 and I choose to restore to 8/9 and I find that this wasn't the right point to restore will I be able to restore to another point ?

Another question if you allow me, in this pic "https://www.eightforums.com/attachments/tutorials/24113d1372905919-startup-options-menu-boot-windows-8-windows_8.1_restart_to_advanced_startup.jpg"
    - If I use option 1 that would be like reset to factory settings without losing progs and data or what ?
    - If I use option 2 I'll lost my activation ?
    - What is the exact difference between option 1 & 2 ?

Sorry for all these questions but I finally found a pro to ask

    You're welcome Abdo,

You'll be able to select a restore point earlier than the date you restored to, but any after that date will be gone. However, you also have the option to undo the system restore.

A reset would be like a clean install, or a factory recovery if it's an OEM PC with a preinstalled Windows 8.

A refresh basically reinstalls Windows 8, but keeps your user accounts and anything in their user folders. You will lose all installed apps and programs though.

    Hello Brink
I have spent hours trying to answer this. I have Win 8.1 pro x 64 and need to know the settings for VSS as I want restore points to be created automatically and Macrium to run as it should -it depends upon VSS.
I read your chart so should I use 'manual' and 'start' which is 'running', if I am not mistaken?
I am not techy and would really appreciate a final answer to this problem of which 2 selections I should make.
    Thank you sir

    Hello Peter,

For me, it's setting as enabled and Manual by default.

If you would like to me safe and have you bases covered, you could set it to enabled and Automatic.

    Hi again Brink
I was thinking that the two versions might have different terms.
When I click properties I see manual that is clear. Whether it should be start or stop is my question.
I am trying to restore default.
I feel awful for the time I have consumed but it seems I cannot get the start or stop resolved. I have no enabled term in my properties.
I also think I am guilty of cross posting for which I truly apologize.

    No worries Peter.

Enabled was used to just mean to not be disabled so that you are able to set VSS to "Manual" (default) or "Automatic". VSS is not started (running) by default.
