one of the guy's at my work would prefer DOS....he also hates windows 8...but then he's never actually used it for more than a minute or two.

It's a little faster than 7.
I like the big clear tiles on start panel. No more squinting.
Being able to change the width of blinking cursor is a definite +

I have occasional (perhaps 10-20% of the time?) startup performance issues with Win8 that I never had with Win7:

1) I use start8 to take me right to the desktop. Sometimes when I boot up the laptop and login, it will go to the Metro Start screen for a few seconds first, then kind of go "oh yeah, I was supposed to start in desktop mode" and then goes to desktop. Most of the time, it goes right to desktop like it's configured.

2) I configured my touchpad so that a tap on the pad does not do a click. However, sometimes the pad tap will click right after startup. Sometimes this goes on for 30 seconds or more until the driver settings actually take effect then the touch pad tap won't click (finally) as configured.

I'm still monitoring to determine actual frequency and when/why it decides to exhibit this delay.

mine's like that on boot from shutdown. tap to bring up the lock screen, then on with my business after entering my password. I think it actually needs to load to the start screen before it fetches settings of any kind.

as to my opinion? 8 is definitely a keeper for me as well.

My biggest gripe outside of start, is the fact that default apps are those damn metro apps which rip me away from the desktop. I find it rather infuriating to use Windows 8 for any length of time. I just find that I am always more or less frustrated.

I was on a Windows 8 box today, and needed a screenshot. Usually, I click on start, run and type snip and it's there. On 8 I had to hit the Windows key and jump off the desktop, then type snip, then click it and snapped back to desktop. So, while not more steps it more time consuming...I found it utterly annoying, distracting and it made me a bit angry. Am I being irrational?. Yes. But it's honestly how I feel. I know I am not alone. Had this convo with quite a number of people at work.

What? That's the exact same thing as on 7. Hit Start, type snip, hit enter. Same process on Windows 8, different UI. But again with the apps, just remove them and make a full screen full of Desktop apps.

I don't know if something irrational can be considered a legitimate complaint....

Also, were you trying to take a snippet of something or just a screenshot? Because that's easier on Windows 8, Start key and PrintScreen, bam, that's all.

You didn't read or understand pparks1 post.

You've ALWAYS been able to perform PRT SCRN with windows at least as far back as Windows 3.0 -- remember though it captures THE ENTIRE SCREEN and then you have to paste it into an application and fiddle around with it if you just need a part of the screen. That's why earlier versions of Windows (for example XP) used 3rd party apps like snagit to capture directly to the clipboard an area of the screen that you could select.

However you can always pin the snipping tool to the taskbar -- I had to do that as well in W7 so that's not a real W8 issue here.

The main gripe I have with W8 is the whole full screen metro stuff which I neither need or use. I also don't want to pin too many apps to the taskbar or the desktop so this is where not having a sensible menu gets really annoying -- I hate scrolling leftwards for about 7 KM in order to find anything and run it.

OK we are splitting hairs here --what I actually meant was that apps like snagit and snipping tool captures a USER area which you select via your mouse rather than a fixed area whether it's the FULL screen or the active (current) screen.

I think that is what most people would have imagined that is what I actually meant. Capturing a user selectable area rather than a fixed area.

Remember also that the snipping tool makes it easy to highlight a feature via the "pen" feature -- for example you can draw a circle around a piece of the screen you want to draw attention to. Can't easily be done via the PRT-SCRN method.

As opposed to having to scroll down drill through multiple folders. I find the side scroll is way faster in the tile form. I can fly right to it, click and be done.

But for the OP, I think you should have just said you don't like the metro interface rather than gripe about how to access the Snipping tool. Since it's easily accessed the same exact way as in Win7.
