File Explorer not showing anything

Just when I thought it was fixed ....well all icons show but no thumbs. Some do some Donr. I have a folder full of videos and pics and all thumbnails are white. If iI didn't have so much stuff on this PC I'd chuck it. Really, this shouldn't be this difficult.

In Windows 8 Manager, there's an option Icon repair. Increase the icon cache size to max, click on rebuild icon cache. Restart the PC.

In addition, with those blank white icons. Make sure you have a file association for each video file type.

Thanks, unfortunately I tried that. They'll be there for a while then when I open a new explorer, they're white. I'm about fed up with Microsoft. My computer is fairly new, well taken care of, no viruses or hardware issues. Yet this keeps happening.

Well, let us not to rush into blaming Microsoft because you are experiencing something that millions other users don't have so obviously, there is something that is not right with your setup and configuration.

File explorer is one of the most important core component in Windows, it does a lot of things in the background when you open it, it does registry modification, it updates your start screen layout etc... so if something is not setup right, it will cause conflict.

Having said that, the next step, I would suggest you to download a copy of ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows, run it as admin. From the Options menu, click on Filter by extensions, select context menu and disable anything that are non microsoft (pink high lite). And also, open task manager then click on the startup tab, disable everything then reboot your PC to see if it helps.

I do not see anything poink, this i swhat I see. An I am not mad at microsoft, but I have 3 pc's and all have Windows 8, and all have issues, it never ends, never. It is a constant race to try and tweak this or that to make things better, as much as the sofware is, it should work properly for the most part. no? Untitled.png

Also, I created a new profile and stil am getting the same thing. It will work just fine, then all of the sudden file explorer isn't showing everything and all icons in external and internal drives are just white. I mean, what is going on with this! I ahve done all I can think of!

I appreciate the responses but nothing seems to be working. I am really going to be upset if I need to reinstall windows, or even refresh for that matter, as I will lose any and all installations. There has to be some type of full scan that checks for any and all errors, no? I mean, no virus, I have done what everone suggested and it works for about 15 minutes, then when I go to open a new explorer window, boom noting there except for desktop. I like this forum because the acutal micrsoft forum is terrible IMO. Seems like none of the answers are friendly towards those who are not coders, programers, or software developers and they all seem to be automated responses and it just turns me off to the site toitally. I have had luck here, but this one is really kicking my butt

By looking at the screen shot you posted in the other thread. Some of the items on the left navigation pane are missing ie. Computer, Network etc...

The problem might be more serious than we thought and I am suspecting your registry database is corrupted which dism, sfc etc... will not find it. Let us try to download CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download and run the registry scan to see if it helps.
Good luck !!!

I am going crazy! Where is that screen shot? I cannot find it and am trying other avenues to fix this!

Mike,

you should try a refresh or repear, not a new install.

Add to refresh once and nothing was lost.

I will try the repair, but I have, in fact, done a "refresh" in the past. It doesn't remove any files, but it uninstall ALL software. Which is a last resort for me, I have tons of software, most older and when I moved thew away most boxes, etc so not all software would be recoverable.

Do you have any restore points made before you started having problems ?

Just a thought.
It may or may not work.

Is it possible, for your older programs, to save the Folder they are in & add the folder back after a refresh or restore ?

When I look at program folders, they have, it seems, all the stuff it takes to make them work.
A picture:

I've never tried it, but it might work.
I guess you could test it by copying an easily replaced program folder & removing the program & then replacing the copied folder.

Or maybe I'm reaching for straws. :(

I am sure that is possible, but the problem is, I not longer have the cases, or papers that contain the Keys. I can keep the install files, but no serial, no software :(

Is there some type of Windows repair disk that I can download that could possibly try and fix the OS? I tried Auto repar and it said microsoft couldnt' repair, and I have no restore points that go back far enough.
