    1. This program does not require installation, just right click and run as Administrator
    2. From the menu, click on Options then click on Filter by Extension Type and select Context Menu
    3. On the list, you'll see some of the entries with pink background, those are installed by the third party software
    4. Hold down CTRL Key and select all of them then click on the red button on top left corner to disable.
    5. Click on the Options again and select Restart Explorer
    6. Now try to right click on desktop to see if it fix your problem. If it does then start to enable one by one and repeat step 5 until the problem occurs again, that's the offending extension.

I have been looking for days for a solution. That one is just perfect and solved my right click problem, finally ! Thanks to topgun. Unfortunately, that is my Kasperky context menu which is slowing down my first right click. I liked my kaspersky right click . I will try to reinstall it maybe.

I have this problem in Windows 8 on my laptop that I bought this morning. I tried the above solution, but disabling the third party entries didn't fix it. I've also seen people talk about Nvidia and Bluetooth software causing this problem, but as far as I can tell, I don't have either program/driver on my PC. Do you guys have any advice? Would switching to 8.1 fix the problem? This is extremely frustrating!

Please fill out your system specs as much as you can so we know what type of laptop you have, Make & Model, RAM etc...
Since you just bought the Laptop this morning, there must be a lot of bloatware, adware, trial software being installed by the manufacturer so the first thing I would recommend is to uninstall those to get your Laptop cleaned up a little bit then we can go from there.

In addition to Shell Extensions, There are also services, Processes running in the background that can cause the system to slow down and abnormal behavior.

Update to Windows 8.1 is not advisable at this point until you get your system running as it should and in addition, you'll need to make a system image backup since you cannot back out once you update it to Windows 8.1

    Hope this helps.

I did as you recommended stopping all third party installed entries, but the problem persist. I have a folder with movies in MP4, the first right click on a file is really slow, without closing the folder, the next right click is instantaneous.

Thanks. it works for me! In my case NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension, version 311.46, (C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvshext.dll) caused the problem. I think i'd better update it and check it again!

It does not matter if you disable it since this is a shell extension for your right click but I am not sure if this is a sytem file, I looked in mine and it's not there. Google it and I found this file belongs to a company called TODO in chinese. Maybe you should scan your PC with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Protect, Detect & Remove Malware From Your PC
