Despite Imminent Retirement, More Users Move to Windows XP

HippsieGypsie, if you really want to show your grandson a picture of a "dinosaur" show him an ATM machine. With 95% of the world's ATM's still running XP, it should not be too difficult to find one to show that XP has not expired, yet.

#1. When ATMs were being developed XP was the present day OS, not Vista, 7, or 8/8.1. Some do rum 2000, NT, CE, Linux or other. Do you think financial institutions or private ATM owners are going spend capital to upgrade to a new OS just because a new one is released?

#2. 95% of bank ATMs face Windows XP security deadline - Mar. 4, 2014

It might sound odd that ATMs are running on aging software better suited to a home PC. In fact, security experts have chastised the financial industry for putting ATMs on a PC operating system in the first place. They argue ATMs should be using software that is scaled down and less buggy, such as Linux.

But banks long ago decided that Microsoft's familiar way of displaying windows and text would sit well with customers.

Upgrading to Windows 7 or 8 will give ATMs more of a sleek feel that resembles the latest apps on tablets and smartphones, said Jeff Dudash, a spokesman for ATM manufacturer NCR.

#3. It is known amongst the hacking crowd that ATMs are easy prey and will be more so when the dino is no longer supported. I’ll make sure to check if my bank changes.

#4. Could you just post a screenshot of your XP desktop so for me to show my grandson? Oh! That’s right. Your XP is not capable. Neither is 7 BTW.

Cheers

HG

Sorry to disappoint your grandson, but my XP is wiped out...went to Linux. And this 8.1? Oops...I run Linux on, too. And if Windows Nine is another Microsoft bust? Bye bye Eight. However, if you want to show him XP, many businesses, hospitals, doctors and of course banks are still running it. Now if you want to go outside the US, you have China and the UK's NHS. Plenty of examples that show Business is Empowered by XP.

I do not understand your animosity towards XP. Even the critics of Microsoft had to say yeah, they got that one right. Proof is in the pudding, XP is not going down quietly. I can pretty much say that the end of support for Eight will be good riddance, even Microsoft is trying to bury it when it is not even dead, yet.

But perhaps I shall run XP virtual, along with 3.1 and ME oh and maybe throw Vista in the mix. Yes, I still have these OS. Besides Linux, my favourite OS is still PC-DOS. Yes that is PC not MS, DOS.

No animosity towards it whatsoever. It was a great OS for it's day. It proved itself well. No doubt. What I do wonder is why someone or institution would want to run old tech if they can afford the newest. As with any OS, MS keeps adding newer tech to launch enterprise and the masses into better ways. e.g. :winkey: + Print Screen key = picture file in 8/8.1 > There's now a way in some UEFIs to send a pic file (I forget the extension) to a USB drive to recover after boot. 8.1 with services to sync with other personal devices > Windows To Go > My bank has a few ATMs with touch screens that I figure has to be running 7 to do so. Those are just a few minor additions. The list is long.

I just simply don't understand why someone would want to use that tech on a daily basis other than to tinker with as you mentioned.

Bottom line > MS cannot afford to support such old tech unless someone wants to pay for that tech service support. It isn't MS.org, a nonprofit organization. Companies know that as soon as they load an OS sooner or later service expires. That's a fact of life in the tech world and probably always will be.

Snippingtool.exe is part of Windows 7 and for XP, I think Shift + Print Screen copies the screen to the clipboard (as does all OS)...but I haven't tried on XP in a long time so that part could be wrong.

Thank-you MasterChief, I was going to state that XP can take a screen shot. I just could not find if ME could. And 98 did not have, from what I can tell the ability to take a screen shot.

I always love the line of reasoning that it cost money to keep an OS going. (Don't tell Linux that shhh.) Okay, there are approximately 500 million computers running XP. Let us cut that in half because of those "bad" copies. So we now have 250 million.
Many people do pay for a security system. (Point to keep in mind) If you were to charge One Dollar a month to keep the patches going for XP, that would be 12 times 250 million which (I hope I did my math correctly) 3 Billion Dollars. That would not be enough to keep it going? Gates, the world's richest man at 76 billion, would he sneeze at bringing in 4% a year of his total worth? Um I know I would not.

Even though you HG, do not understand how others can use the dinosaur, there are those that can not understand how you use Eight. Many do not need the latest technology to run their business nor live their lives.

As WHS says, I too think this is a money making idea. I could not fault MS for charging to support the OS at this point in time. Of course, there will be piracy like there always is, but there is money to be made from people and corps. that will pay.

I think it would make them more money than depending on 8 and its "features" (tied in services) alone.

Let's put it this way: If I was a die-hard XP lover (which I am not, I think it's good though) - then I would pay a dollar per month without question.

Not really. That would be the thin edge of the edge.

If it went reasonably well, they might try and apply to all os. In addition to all the other tracking/targeting/renting stuff they are trying to hook users into. Not easy to see how they would get away with that, but best not to give them any ideas.

This is a great business idea. Keep maintaining XP for a small fee and make it hard for those that do not want to pay.

Well said, a XP machine can handle a large variety of tasks in a home or small business office. I particularly have older rigs running XP and they perform well in the whole scene. Of course all my newer rigs run Win 7 and/or Win 8.1, but my XP rigs will still be alive for quite some time before being retired.

Yes, Snipping tool is included in 7. I know it wasn't in XP. Not sure about Vista. Print Screen > Open pic edit program > paste > save. What I meant was as in my post #123 where I explained :winkey: + Print Screen key = picture file (and saved to folder) all in one operation, not in 4. Much more advanced.

Vista had the snipping tool, but you had to enable the tablet functions (who knows why). Prt Scrn works the same in Win7. You print the screen and use the paste button in Paint to show it. There you can edit it, make comments, arrows, etc. In 8.1 it is easier to store but then you have more work to post edit it.

I use Jing anyway. That's a lot nicer and has more function including automatic uploads.

I use snipping tool. Like Windows 8 just fine. Don't use start screen or new apps at all. I use win8 on new devices that come with it, but I have left my existing win7 boxes alone as I don't have a need to spend money to upgrade.
